Congratulations to them. A very good club, well ran, a manager who has done a great job and a team that has done brilliantly. An unpretentious club, its good to see them get back up.
I read the other day that finances wise, Villa needed to win this game, or else they will have to look at the implications on salaries and contracts, possibly getting shut of a few players. Their big support will help, of course. But it’s that old second season syndrome again. You get relegated and get the parachute payments, but if you don’t bounce straight back up first season, it’s imperative that second season you do. Theyve just fell short, but they may as well have finished tenth. The head shed will have to go over the finances, can they keep such and such… Is John Terry still a viable option? Etc. We’ve seen it happen to so many so called big clubs, Leeds, Forest, Ipswich, etc. You just become another ‘also ran’ club, star players having jumped ship or been sold, and replaced by a lesser calibre of player.
Steve Bruce will have an even harder job on next season. Their chance was there today. They didn’t take it. But Fulham won on merit.
