You might be right George but in my 50 years of watching football I have never known a match to be called off due to flooding round the ground with the pitch playable. You may be able to drag one out but it’s not something I recall. There was still access to the ground and I would imagine it was just the car park at the side of the druggie that was flooded, the stony one at the side of the bridge and the ones on the soccer dome side would have been fine.
All it needed was a bit of planning, we all knew it was going to bucket down. With all that flooding in Carlisle a few weeks back, the racing still went ahead. From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!27 December 2015 at 1:35 pm #146370The pitch wasn’t playable. Some parts were waterlogged and the ball wouldn’t even roll. All the main routes to the ground and parts of the car park near the Douglas were flooded too.
27 December 2015 at 1:36 pm #146371I still reckon we made a mistake not signing Nahki WELLS. Good in situations like yesterday. I reckon Ian KilFORD could have done a job yesterday too.
27 December 2015 at 1:58 pm #146372Not important when you see the shocking pictures of wigan folk without a habitable home tonight.
The roads around the stadium were awful and the river was spilling over so they made the right decision regardless of the pitch state.
good decision wiganWhat about the poor bar stewards in Wigan without a habitable home rain or no rain. Everyone knows where the flood plane is in Wigan, it just happens to contain the ambulance station, the fire station and the police station. Do I feel sorry for Asda, well nope, sort that roundabout out it just needs a couple of drains at the lower level.
The thing that as done me is if we were still in the prem our pitch WOULD have been playable and the game would have gone ahead.[/quote]
The pitch was waterlogged anyway but even had we been in the prem the game would have been cancelled in certain of it.
Three access points to the stadium were flooded they did the right thing.
I remember a game against villa being cancelled after a major snowstorm in December 2010 due to access problems caused by snow.
Plenty of people affected in wigan by these dreadful floods a football match in the third division means nothing in my opinion .27 December 2015 at 5:42 pm #146373Least Fleetwood games definitely on.

We all know that games have been called off due to treacherous conditions under foot around stadiums it has happened to us.
I’ve traveled to most grounds in England and Wales and some have just one road in and one way out. They cope all right it just takes more time to get away, some times best part of an hour, I’ve bin there, done that and got the T-shirt, like many others.
Sheff Utd fans I would imagine would come down the 62 then on to the 61 and off at the Macron. Aspull, Whelley, Swinley, Beech Hill all accessible, they may have had to sort the road out at the bridge near the car sales garages.
The car parks side of the soccer dome all fine and plenty of space for all the away fans and perhaps some home fans.As for the home fans, how many do you see going over the canal bridge after the game to areas around Woodhouse lane and onward, probably thousands. All fine in that direction apart from probably the bridge, off Woodhouse lane, remember a few years ago this being under water to just below the knees and people carrying other folk across.
The rest of the roads in the Wigan Area fine, so those who are coming via the Ashton side of the borough could have gone down towards Goose Green up towards Pem and down either Kitt Green Road or Montrose Avenue.
All those from the other side of the borough could have gone via Swinley and the Cheery gardens route, or via the back roads that by pass the Cherry Gardens route.
Now I’ve worked that out in 5 mins, an official Wigan Emergency Planning Team, that I know exists and I’ve been part of in my time, could have sat down and made the necessary arrangements with diversion signs and a little help from the Highways department.
The pitch would have needed sections covering, the areas they know hold water.
I will stick with what I said, if we had been playing man utd in a premier league game, the above would have happened, probably with financial help from the FA and the game would have gone ahead.
It didn’t because it would have cost a bit of money and there was no pressure from the football world to make it happen.
This country is the worst in the world for planning for emergencies and I’m not talking hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes, volcano eruptions etc., I’m talking a heavy downpour or 30 cm of snow, even when the Met Office have told us what is going to happen several days in advance. This bleedin Fleetwood game better go ahead, although I would imagine having played yesterday and we didn’t, the club may not make one effort to prepare the pitch, if the weather turns again later today and overnight.

28 December 2015 at 1:01 am #146378Didn’t go near the stadium, but did see a tweet from Greg Farrimond (WEP) about 1 pm, said that cars were turning round on Scott Lane as it was flooded near the stadium. Asda roundabout was flooded which meant only one of the 2 roads near the stadium was accessible safely.
Can’t agree with the point about it going ahead if it was a PL game….if that was the case, why didn’t the Villa or Bolton game (2009) get played. Think the council would have been too busy sorting blocked/flooded roads and making sure people were safe than worrying about a football match which can be played anytime in the next 5 months.

There was more than one safe road in a I have pointed out,it would have just been a bit of an inconvenience FFS. I bet our friends in the Nordic countries are pishing their sides at the very thought of a match being called off cos of a bit of rain. :P
