I have always thought being a football manager was one of the most insecure jobs. Lose a few games and you may get sacked, the fans start having a go and you may get sacked.
However we have a manager who took over a team that was more than comfortable in the premier lge. with a decent defence, and has transformed (we must have stopped transforming by now) it into abit of a joke. Letting goals in, in a frightening volume and hardly scoring any.
The only thing i can think of is that he was told to turn us from a decent team into a team easy to beat, he must have been told to buy some players not up to the job, and let other team score when they want to.
Because if his remit was to develop the team into a team challenging for Europe playing an exciting free flowing style of football he has failed, unless that is we are still transforming into it?
if we are still transforming, maybe they can turn it into a blockbuster film. alltogether now:
“transformers – footballers in disguise.”

I remember a certain member of the current backroom staff, got sacked on sunday why having his tea, after a 6,2 thrashing, bet Mr Barrow wondering is Mr Whelan losing his marbles.
Latics got beat 5-0 by United 3 games into last season & 4 days later Blackpool beat us 4-1.
3 games after that we got beat 4-0
I wouldn’t say it took us a while to get hammered at all.
Saw some stat this morning that said Latics have conceded 25 goals in our last 6 games – Its shocking but no doubt Bobby would come out with a similar statement to that given in the “fanzine interview” last season (or it may have been the fans forum) when queried about our poor defensive record which ran along the lines of “yeah but if you take all the heavy kickings we’ve had out of our stats thay actually look pretty good”
He forever talks about learning lessons but I don’t think he’s learnt any from his mistakes the entire time he’s been here

If a child does something really naughty, or dangerous, it’s parents will either wag an angry finger at them, or if necessary, even ‘wrap’ their backside or back of their legs with the flat of their hand. This may result in a few momentary tears…..but usually, the message will have been put firmly across, and the child won’t do the same thing wrong again. THAT is a lesson learned.
But our manager and players? No….they don’t learn.
Martinez comes out with the same old clap-trap all the time “we must take positives…”, “we need to find the solutions…”, “we need to learn lesssons…” Blah Blah Blah… It really is, as if he knows he is out of his depth, but is just trying to stretch it out for as long as he can manage.
Positives? From a 6-0 defeat? There are NONE.
Find the Solution? Get a new manager in. Simple.
Learn Lessons? No more ‘jobs for the boys’ sentimentality.
Pretty straight forward, really. Only an over-techically minded Spaniard could make it sound difficult.
blueneon – i remember that game very well against mansfield. our window cleaners were latics fans & i recall were quite chuffed when he got sacked. didn’t barrow play a similar formation to bobby as well with the 1 man up front – notably mark leonard.
might have heard wrong on this one, but was one of the reasons he got sacked was because whelan thought barrow couldn’t take the club forward.
i was also surprised when barrow came back actually.

I always thought it was quite harsh on Barrow, considering that only a few weeks previously, the club and players, had been rocked by the tragic death in a car crash of Michael Millett. It knocked the club for six,and apparently Barrow was ‘distraught’ about it. The first game after he died, I think we lost 1-0 to Plymouth, but nobody was bothered. I know the Mansfield game was soon after, because the cover on the programme was of a scarf tied around the tree (where he crashed) and it featured a tribute to him, and pictures of the minutes silence at the Plymouth game, throughout. I thought it was a bit like telling somebody at a funeral that they were being finished!
But I suppose that ‘ruthlessness’ is why Mr Whelan has all his wealth. And to be fair, John Deehan came in and did a smashing job, really, starting off our path to the Premiership.
graham barrow told mr wheelan you wont get out of this leauge with three spanish players thats why
If ya remember Barrow didnt like to play the three Amigos together,he had a point Izzy and Seba wernt cut for that league, after say Bobby boy was the best out the three by a country mile.
