A real game of two halves. Completely in control first half they could not have complained if they were four or five down at half time. I would never have believed that they could get back into it but they did ,their number 19 started winning everything in the air and was a real handful and before you know it they are back on level terms .Luckily for us our never say die attitude paid dividends again and we got the winner. Maybe lessons learned about game management but we can’t be too critical ,17 unbeaten and top of the league. I thought Shinnie was excellent first half but faded badly in the second ,Humphries was excellent and took his goal well ,Edwards also had a good game. In the end a deserved win but we made it a lot harder than it should have been. On to Tuesday ,hopefully we play our under 23s.
23 January 2022 at 8:17 am #195193I thought Shinnie was a bit negative sideways or back. He disappeared in the 2nd half because Gillingham went long.
Personally I feel Power has been outstanding along with Lang our best 2 players so I really don’t get shifting him to right back absolutely wasted back there.Gillingham’s achilles heel was corners/set piece and it was eventually their undoing.
23 January 2022 at 9:01 am #195194No way was Shinnie negative. You can see why he was voted Derby player of the season. Yes he faded in the second half, but so too did many others. But he did all the simple stuff so effectively. This was his first game in over a month. When he has found his feet I’m confident you’ll see a player of decent quality.
23 January 2022 at 5:31 pm #195196I have to say that our midfield seemed so much more composed with him in it. I also have to agree that I didn’t think him negative – a number of his passes were really searching and put us in good positions. A sign of a class midfielder for me is the time he has on the ball and Shinnie never seemed harassed by the Gillingham lot at all!
23 January 2022 at 7:49 pm #195199In any division of football the period after the turn of the year is harder as teams start to fight promotion and relegation battles.
Reality kicks in and we have seen from the last two games how teams can hurt us when they play direct route one style.
Every game from here will be as tough and the manager needs to
Bring them down to earth because despite the win yesterday I felt we showed a lackadaisical approach after we went 2 up.
Could easily have gone in at half time 3 or 4 up and game finished.
They obviously picked up on that and got back into the game and I’m thinking we will have many games like the one yesterday in the run in.
That said the character this Latics team has is arguably the best I have ever witnessed in my 40 plus years of watching the club and it was that that grabbed the win yesterday when things were not going well.
Big month coming up and a very tough run of fixtures, a crucial part of the season for me.23 January 2022 at 9:44 pm #195200What encourages me is that we’ve won matches in different ways taking the lead, coming from behind and winning the game twice as we did yesterday.
It also a good sign that we can raise our game when we need it during a match, is a quality which we’ll definitely need to keep for the rest of the season.
I would like to say “we need some clean sheets”, but sods law would probably lead to a run of 0-0s
25 January 2022 at 2:57 am #195203Shinnie would regular pick the ball up and granted, he kept it moving but by passing to his side or back. If he passed it forward he then dropped in with the centre halfs. I think you guys need to watch the game again.
At times we missed that 30-40 yard cross field ball Power offers and his shot from outside the box which he ain’t scared of trying and sometimes pulls off.My point is, the wrong midfielder was stuffed out wide for me to make way for some who’s not to keen on going forward, Powers been outstanding one of our best players along with Lang so for me he should not be punished and played out of position, utter wasted I’d drop Naylor first.
Rose tinted specs off guys, see n say it how it was. I’m not here to slag off Shinnie on his starting debut its how it was
Short back n sides
