Right, I’ve waited until now so I can calm down a bit and not be accused of making a knee-jerk reaction.
That last night, was a disgrace. It really was. As soon as we saw the team Martinez had put out, we were rolling our eyes at each other and thinking “Oh oh, this could be TOO weak a team”.
But then you looked at it, and it consisted of our first choice keeper, a first choice centre-back, the rest of the side was mainly players with enough first team action, apart from McManaman and Redmond. Whilst up front, we had the 6 million Boselli. Surely it would be enough to beat Bradford. But no. Apart from Al-Habsi, Watson, and Ramis, I don’t think any of them performed anywhere near good enough. I can’t understand how some folk on here have slated Watson. FFS! He was asked to play centre-half when he’s a bloody midfielder! Here’s a blunt assessment of the team.
AL HABSI-No criticism. Did nothing wrong.
RAMIS-No Criticism.
WATSON-Filled in admirably at the back, no criticism.
LOPEZ-Didn’t do much wrong really.
STAM-Looked out of his depth. Always seems to have to really bust a gut to beat a man and get a ball over. Not good enough.
REDMOND-Young lad’s not good enough yet.
JONES-Poor. Very avearage against a League 2 side.
GOMEZ-Poor. Just not good enough.
FYVIE-Poor. Looked nowhere near good enough.
MCMANAMAN-Did ok first half, but doesn’t look Premiership standard.
BOSELLI-Abysmal. Looked nowhere near good enough.
Subs: MALONEY-livened things up, BEAUSEJOUR-Lively but I’m not convinced he’s good enough. ORSULA-Waste of a sub, going into penalties. Surely Kone would’ve been better?
For me, Stam, Jones, Gomez, and Boselli should NEVER play for us again. I will give Fyvie a chance, as he’s only a young lad. Looked ordinary to me though.
Whatever way people dress it up, it was embarrassing. It DID show contempt for Bradford by playing such a weak side, a total lack of respect. I recall going to Villa Park, circa 1994 in the same competition. We were then a bottom flight club, Barrow had just taken over as manager, and as a club we were on our arses near the bottom of the entire league. Did Aston Villa play a weak team against us? No. Ron Atkinson played his stars, and they did us 5-0 with goals from Dalian Atkinson 2, Dean Saunders, Dwight Yorke, and Nii Lamptey. They well and truly hammered us. But at the same time, showed us a great deal of respect.
And that is exactly what we should’ve done to Bradford. Played a strong side, won by 4 or 5, and played some class football. We may have gained some confidence from it as well.
But no. It was a shambles. It’ll be the last cup match I go to for a while, unless it’s a semi or a final. The worst thing about last night? (For me, personally) I’ve just got my 6 year old fully interested in Latics and going to the match. He was so fed up and looked absolutely p’d off last night, I don’t think he will want to go again. I don’t blame him, actually.
F****** un-defendable, that shower last night. No clever reasoning or smart-arsed comment will convince me otherwise. Just NOT acceptable at all and I wish Whelan would fire a rocket up Martinez for it.
Absolutely spot on all of that.
His ignorance and arrogance well and truly caught up with him last night.
I am a big fan, but just like one poster mentioned earlier, the fans need something to smile about every once in a while and i cant help but feel we have thrown away a fantastic opportunity for him to do just that.
Alright Dave , I’ll see your rant and I’ll raise it.
After impressive away wins against decent Forest and WHU sides it was obvious we would field a similar line up last night , especially when we have a difficult but vastly more important game coming up this weekend. Last night we probably rested a couple more defenders than previous but the way Bradford played we could have coped with you and me at the back.
Despite playing against the most negative formation I have ever seen , for most of the second half they were using a flat back 6 , we still created enough chances to normally win comfortably. But that’s football – last night nothing went in – maybe at Spurs everything will go in. As the game went on our players lost heart ( along with the fans ) whilst their players ( and crowd ) were lifted – if it had ended after 90 minutes we’d have gone to Bradford next week and murdered them. However it didn’t and they got the penalty shoot out that they came for.
Some of the reactions I’ve seen on here and more so on TNS are completely irrational. Yes , It was a disappointing result but if we go and get something at Spurs it’ll be forgotten quicker than you can say -I was so angry I turned my computer off.
Hang on a bit manny i dont think it will be forgotten if we get summut at spurs,in fact i think it will be rememberd for rest of season at least, cos it looks like its goin to be a very long season again with not so many smiles :(

Agree with much of that SMB, except you say West Ham had a decent team out against us. Nah, they were totally different than the team we played last Saturday. Have a look back.

Whatever it was or wasn’t last night, the outcome shouldn’t be forgotten.
To go out against Bradford at home and fail to profit from a favourable next round draw, is without doubt a missed opportunity.
Hopefully, the Bantams will be drawn against Manure (bring to an end the ‘if only…’ debate); be nice for them to make a few bob as well.
If you don’t believe that Stam was the worst/laziest player on show for Latics last night I will have to revise my opinion of you.[/quote]
My point is that many have been talking up Bosselli in recent weeks, and let’s be honest he’s performed in the Capital cup games.
Last night was his chance to further reinforce his claim, and show once again that when called upon he can deliver particularly as he hasn’t had much game time recently, notwithstanding Martinez noises to open up the competition (exception – Fulham, substitute appearance).
Unfortunately, he spurned his chance last night big-time.
That’s not to say others performed as well as one would have expected.
Well Norwich and Swansea have progressed to the Quarters tonight. Add to those Leeds, Middlesbrough and Villa from last night and you cant help but think what might have been !!
Correct…that’s me done now with Cup games while RM in charge…I also as someone said used to go to most away games but have slowly dropped off under RM..PS I’m not a RM hater.

I also thought I would sleep on it before commenting on last nights debacle. I thought long and hard as to what I was going to say, and I thought I would read other peoples comments before jumping in and ranting about it.
After reading the above post I don’t need to bother commenting further as everything said in that post is spot on. Great points, well put.
Well Norwich and Swansea have progressed to the Quarters tonight. Add to those Leeds, Middlesbrough and Villa from last night and you cant help but think what might have been !!
LEAGUE CUP QUARTER-FINAL DRAW
Leeds United v Chelsea
Swansea v Middlesbrough
Norwich v Aston Villa
Bradford v Arsenal
Good draw for Bradford, Emirates would probably have been better (£££)
Wigan ?
Beat Arsenal (win, draw, pens), avoid Chelsea and a Wembley appearance was very much up for grabs ….

Aye un if mi Aunty had a knob she’d bi mi uncle! :woohoo:
I hope it’s a Bradford v Boro or Swansea Final, but it will most likely be Arsenal v Chelsea.
I’m sure Sky will heat their balls up before putting them in the bag so they can make sure they avoid each other.

Unfortunately not. Had we progressed we’d have been ball 4 with Leeds moved up to ball 3 in place of Bradford. Therefore, we’d have been playing Chelsea in the next round.

Bet Uncle Dave likes that !! Money down the drain !!

Would we? How were they numbered?
If purely alphabetically then the draw as it stands is
5 v 4
8 v 6
7 v 2
3 v 1
If we were 8 we would have played number 6, Norwich, at home.
However 3 v 1 would have been Chelsea v Arsenal, so that draw would never have happened ;)
