“I’m not concerned – not at all,” he told the Evening Post.

“Of course it would be nice to be scoring goals, but the sharpness isn’t quite there because of the work they’re doing.

“We had a double training session yesterday and another one on the morning of the game, which we wouldn’t normally do.

“The players are going into the games fatigued, they’re not ready and fresh, so it’s understandable that the sharpness isn’t quite there in some players.

Sorry Gary but i can’t get my head around that comment, furthermore August 6th is only two weeks away, time to start thinking about your first eleven, for me five friendlies and no goals IS a concern!

Some reserves players have seen more game time than first team starters so far. I haven’t see any logic in the preparations.

Caldwell will say its all good for squad fitness. But the players can get fit in training.

The remaining games should be used for fine tuning his preferred starting 11 and formation. I will be disappointed if we continue to see players who we are unlikely to see all season.

Hopefully from Saturday it’s the regulars who got us up and promoted with new names slotting in for unavailable/injured players and in available positions. Rest of the new signings on the bench. The rest of the squad players then need to be playing in second string warm up games.
Won’t happen though. Things are not so simple these days or made not to be as simple. Last season’s momentum needs to be kept up and keeping the heroes from last season together may help that.

Lets hope Caldwell has woken up after the mauling we got at Rochdale, i dont believe bringing in new faces is the answer, nowt wrong with the players we have.
Stop hammering these lads with double training sessions just before a match if we want to keep them fresh and performing at their best, if you’re tired you can’t play full throttle in a game.

Only a few days ago GC wasn’t concerned about lack of goals etc a 4-1 pasting soon changed his mind.

We dont look anything like ready for the new season which is less than two weeks away.

Going to the gym 5 days a week should mean they are ready to go. Biggest load of tosh I’ve heard this fitness melarky comment. If the pre-season training is as intense as they all make out they should be chomping at the bit for the season to start all fit as a fiddle.

And if their not ? when are they ever fit ?,

1)August ;- players are not match fit,. looking sluggish

                  2) November:- some players are still not match fit they need 10-15 games under their belt

                  3) January :- squad needs rotating rest a few hard Christmas period, tired legs showing

                  4) March:- long season the players need a beach

                  5) May:- all the players are totally exhausted nothing left to give

Never once have I ever heard a manager come out and say that his players are fighting fit match fitness levels are at their peak and they are all ready to go.
It’s an easy excuse managers throw in rather than say “Were playing utter sh!t at the moment”

                        They’re friendlies thats all.
Purpose = to improve fitness & match sharpness.
If these were league matches i could understand the concern.

And there’s me thinking that a football match was about scoring goals and trying to win matches and maybe creating some sort of game plan to take in to the new season.

Rochdale obviously got it wrong then. :silly:

& i remember one season many years ago where we won practically every pre-season friendly & the fans got excited. Then come the start of the season, we couldn’t buy a win.

The motto is don’t take pre-season friendlies as the be all & end all. As i said previously, be more concerned if this 1 win in 7 were league fixtures as opposed to friendlies.

I can see where GC is coming from…

Pre-season fixtures are all about impressing a new manager, getting match fitness and seeing how any new additions to a squad fit in with the existing members. As GC has just managed the vast majority of the squad throughout a successful season, then for him, it will be all about fitness and how the new additions fit into his tried and trusted formation and tactics.
