SW and SMB – re the 4-3-3 with wingers playing on the wrong side, in practice Rodagella and NZog don’t play high enough up to make it 4-3-3, and the full backs don’t get far enough forward, so it becomes a narrow 5 man midfield, easy for mediocre teams to play against – I don’t think its any coincidence that we have struggled against the poorer sides this season without width from the likes of Valencia. Don’t let Zog scoring one great goal cutting in fool you that this is the way to go.

Personally I’d like to see the wide men switch to their natural sides against the poorer sides to stretch play, and create space for the attacking centre mid to burst into.

At the moment the wide men are cutting in all the time into congested areas and becoming easy to defend against – its how the best teams defend – show them inside, and our players don’t have the ability to play intricately through it

I wasn’t singing the merits of the system, merely pointing out what Martinez is trying to do.

The two men wide men do play as part of a five man midfield, but are supposed to push up in attack, and cut inside. Whether they do tend to remain too deep – too often, maybe so, but I can’t really comment as I’m not a coach.

Would disagree with that we need wingers on their ‘correct’ wings at present though, as there is nobody to cross the ball into with the present squad. Scotland can’t head it, and Rodallega is needs a ball to run onto. If we had a big lad to play up front, then it could be an option.

Really? You’re the only one on here who isn’t, then.

Bus, or more specifically, rear-end of, is probably a more apt description.

SW – I agree that thats what he’s trying to do. I don’t think its particularly effective, nor that attractive to watch.

I think crosses into the box would work OK – say Zog played left side, you’d get Scotland near post, Rodagella far post who would always beat a left back in the air (like super Lee always used to beat their right back), plus Scharner, good in air from midfield.

Like you, I’m not a coach, but the system Martinez is playing seems overly intricate and beyond the ability of the players he’s got to break down lesser teams

Would tend to agree with you that we do not yet have the quality of players to play this system to maximum effect, but it has worked at times going forwards. The issues have come when the team have been peddling backwards.

I don’t agree that it’s not attractive to watch though, as I’d rather see a football passed along the ground as opposed to getting it to touchline and crossed in looking for someone’s head, but that is all down to a matter of personal taste.

I do think Scotland has his merits, but I would prefer a younger version. I’d love to see Kris Boyd playing there when he leaves in the Rangers January closing down sale, but if he goes anywhere it will probably be Birmingham or Cardiff.

A couple of energetic full backs would also be very useful.

Martinez is supposed to be looking for a new keeper. Another possible Rangers balance-the-books sales could be Alan McGregor, and he’d be a great signing, but would expect to be number one choice, and I can’t see that happening at present.

So, that’s about it for who I’d like us to sign, but reasonably expect us not to.

WHAT, After a season, How many players have you seen play for Wigan, Cattermole was ok, Just a bit tough and steely, Doesn’t make him a world beater. One of the best my arse. Id take Bullard, Greenhall, Martinez e.t.c any day over him.

Hey James I support Latics and my 3 lads play for Junior Latics. I would totally agree with you about Jimmy Bullard – my son was devastated when he went to Fulham – he’s a brill player and such a character. If we kept half the squad we’ve sold n built on the team we would have a much better chance – all stems from the top – Mr Whelan (he aint no football chairman – he doesn’t even like the game) its just a money spinner for a richman. Just think if we still had Jason Roberts Ryan Taylor (Heskey on a good day) Jimmy Bull, I personally like Fitz Hall, Henry Camera and Ellington and I think if Valencia played his best for us and we had kept Wilson Polacious – he would have teamed up with his old team mates Henry Thomas and Figs and there would have been no stopping us. Anyway there you go – I wont kid you, I have only really supported the Latics since the first game they got in the Prem (because my lads wanted to support a team and as we had just moved to Wigan – I thought it good to support a local team). We’re all mad for Wigan now – they’ve been mascots have latics bedrooms and attend 99% of the games!!! Cheers – THE CAT!!!!

In my opinion, Scotland had a good first half on Saturday, and served as a decent foil for the two wide men cutting in.

That’s what he’s there to do, and why there is a left footer on the right wing and right footer on the left wing. For everyone who has been saying we need a right winger, maybe so, but he’ll still be played on the left. The whole style of play adopted by Martinez is detached from the traditional English game of the winger beating a man then putting in a cross for the big centre forward to get his head to it.

The idea is for the two wide men to feed off the target man, cut in, and be able to get shots on goal -effectively creating 4-3-3 in attack. The full backs are supposed to push forward, and cover virtually the entire touchline. Whether Melchiot is still up to this, is a matter for debate, but Martinez is allegedly looking for two new full backs in January.

I haven’t seen enough of Gomez to pass judgement on him…..in fact, I don’t even know why I’m bothering trying to explain this, as it will just be discounted as rubbish, and I’ll be accused of looking through rose tinted glasses.. 4-4-2 is the way forward. Hoof it forward. Everyone brought in this season is useless. Martinez out. Whelan spend some money etc etc.

Great post, it’s good to actually see an informed argument about our football. I agree almost entirely with this observation although, like you I can’t argue too much with Piengravy’s points.

It is a simple matter however to swap wingers over in a game and put them on their “correct” wings if plan A does not work. We would need players in the middle who could make good use of crosses from the by-line however and I am not convinced that we have them in the squad yet.
