Should do ok with Villa. He hasnt done too bad before he came to us. Defo not suited to the lone striker roll that seems to be installed with us since the days Scotland was flapping around lost on his own. How would Ellington have been without Roberts? And for that matter Super Lee and Sir Andy in midfield and two attacking full backs in Eaden and Baines.
15 January 2014 at 3:05 pm #125967I see your thinking, Ellington certainly had better support. However I do think Ellington would of done ok in that role as he was very mobile. could hold the ball up and had the ability to create something out of nothing. All 3 qualities that Holt has been lacking in his appearances for our club.
15 January 2014 at 3:19 pm #125968Put your rod away – wouldn’t get a game for Bath Springs
Moves to us to be closer to his family then moves back south to Villa. Seen regularly in and around Carlisle as it happens, bags loaded with pies and puddings.
Lambert took him for someone to turn out with imo
15 January 2014 at 3:19 pm #125969He’s only going on loan!
Let’s hope that Lambert finds a constructive role for him and decides to take him on a permanent transfer. Otherwise, we will be lumbered with Holt and his high wages for two more years.
The wages of Coyle’s signings have already crippled Wanderers. Let’s hope they don’t do the same to Wigan.

I doubt the CEO would have let wages get out of hand. They’re Coyle’s signings, but he didn’t look after the financial aspects of those deals.
15 January 2014 at 4:51 pm #125971But it certainly looks that way, now that we see what wreckage Coyle has left in his wake.
It is a simple story of overrated players, being signed for excessive fees, paid excessive wages and released for next to nothing.
Ian Herbert: Bolton Wanderers decline reveals it doesn’t take overseas proprietors to damage a club
The Independent Tuesday 07 January 2014I think that several of us expressed concern that Coyle was signing the 32 year old on a three year contract.

The Holt End’s tune for him:
Grant holt wherever U may be,
Gregg’s, Maccy d’s or KFC
If u keep us up with your assists and goals,
We’ll pay your wages in sausage rolls.& one for the Blues:
Grant holt wherever U may be,
Gregg’s, Maccy d’s or KFC
If u take Villa down to the Championships,
We’ll pay your wages in fish & chips.15 January 2014 at 10:01 pm #125980He’s only going on loan!

You’re right in the sense they wouldn’t let it get out of hand in terms of putting the club in financial crisis but if we are stuck with him and it isn’t working out for whatever reason then we wont be able to sign someone in his place until his contract runs down …
With Rosler insisting he wants to play a high pressure front line I don’t think Holt is ever going to fit into that role at this time in his career where there is a blatant lack of pace in his game.
Wish him all the best though. If he finds his goal scoring form playing in a front two then we will get a fee for him and he will be enjoying his football again which is a win for both of us.
17 January 2014 at 12:34 pm #126014How would Ellington have been without Roberts? Is that the Nathan Ellington that scored 34 goals in a season and a half without Jason Roberts and 33 in a season and a half with him? ;)
Holt didn’t get the service here too often but when he did he was too lazy to do anything.

And whose career went down the skids when the partnership was broken up?? ;)
I think the original implication was how would he have been had he been stuck up front on his own all the time
17 January 2014 at 2:00 pm #126021Some strikers need a foyle and others cope well enough on their own, that’s the way it is ! Just saying ! Holt looked a decent signing on paper but if the truth be known his form had dipped somewhat from his heyday !

He did quite well at Bristol Rovers without him.

Holt looked a decent signing on paper but if the truth be known his form had dipped somewhat from his heyday !Think most of us thought holt was a decent signing. I spoke to a Norwich fan shortly after signing him and his words were, “you can have him cos he’s s—-. Said he was living on the back of one good season for them. A Forrest fan shortly after said exactly the same thing.
Suppose this signing (as bad as it was) shows whelan was prepared to back coyle. Thankfully he had the good sense to get rid of him sharpish.18 January 2014 at 3:33 am #126035I remember an edition of Have I Got News for You when Roy Hattersley was due to appear. He didn’t turn up, so they replaced him with a tub of lard.
You don’t suppose that Rosler will replace…No, that would be ridiculous.
