Looks like holt is out for another spell so I want to ask the question – is/was he a good signing or not ?
I thought, along with many others that his signing was a good deal for us and he would do a good job in this division, I am now beginning to question my original thinking, he has not been particularly good so far, in fact he’s been a disappointment.
With this latest injury it brings into doubt the thinking in signing a 32 year old who apart from one decent season in the premier league and a another in the championship has hovered in the lower divisions all his career.
I hope he recovers quickly proves me wrong and becomes the player I hoped he would be, the problem is I can’t help thinking back to Andy Saville in our past, he was signed with the same sort of belief, he was big, strong scored goals and always had a good game against us, the 100+k we gave PNE for his signing proved to be money down the drain, he was a disaster.
I just hope we don’t talk about Holt in years to come like Saville.
1 November 2013 at 6:15 pm #123034Andy Saville to replace Graham Lancashire. Money well spent.
Holt scored more goals in his 2 seasons in the PL than most of our strikers put together in the 8 years we were there. We do seem to have a history of signing players with great scoring records that flop. Scotland, Saville, Sammon, Agahowa, Folan, Boselli etc etc.
Personally I thought he was a top buy yes but I don’t think we’re using him to his strength and he can’t be blamed too much for that.
1 November 2013 at 7:12 pm #123037Injury problems aside, if used as a penalty area/6 yard box poacher I think he would be a good signing.
His 1 goal from open play this season & the own goal v Blackburn have shown that when in those areas he can make things happen.
Employed as a lone striker who appears to be expected to play with his back to goal, win the ball, hold it up, lay it off & then get into the penalty area & generally keeping 4 defenders occupied on his own, then I don’t think that he’ll ever work.
Norwich played to his strengths. Coyle seems to play to his weaknesses1 November 2013 at 7:33 pm #123039Spot on.He is not being used as he was at Norwich when he hit he the 2nd most goals by an English striker. His injury again is a blow but for me it brings into question the huge input of players under Coyle yet such a chronic shortage of strikers.I lost count how many times on Wednesday when he was expected to win the ball with 3 defenders on him and not another Wigan player within 20 yds.

2 November 2013 at 12:42 am #123055Norwich fans didn’t want Holt to leave and its not too long ago he was being talked about as a possible call up to the national squad.Likewise Fortune was also well liked by the Baggies fans. These lads have not become ineffective players overnight, only since joining us. Along with the amount of games in which we have drawn a blank surely tells us that it is the way we are playing that is the problem.I think O C is desperate to do well here and bring back success and maybe we are being over cautious in an attempt to get results. Like others on here I believe soon we will muller somebody and we will see the real Grant Holt.

From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!2 November 2013 at 4:20 am #123066So, to get the best out of Holt we need a change of manager?
2 November 2013 at 4:43 am #123069So, to get the best out of Holt we need a change of manager? That would be a bit drastic at this stage, but a change of formation and team selection with players playing in positions they are more accustomed to might not be a bad idea for starters.
2 November 2013 at 6:04 am #123070To get the best out of Holt , Coyle needs to use his wingers in their natural positions and for them to give crosses he can run on to instead of him playing with his back to goal. Coyle is to blame for playing McLean and Macmanaman on the wrong wings, instead of beating defenders and crossing they seem to need to cut inside on their better foot

It was a tongue-in-cheek remark. It may be that at 32 and some months, with a question mark over his fitness, the reason he looks so poor is that he’s gone! It happens.
