FOCUS ON THE LAST PART OF THAT ARTICLE – BELOW ….
I’m not saying that every Latics fan should be at every away game but I’d love it if we just picked a game and turned up en masse, several thousand of us and show the rest of the world what great support we have. But due to ticket allocations and the general inertia of our support it would never happen. Knowing our luck it’d be a nil-nil draw and we wouldn’t get acknowledged anyway, they don’t want to know our good news stories, the media just want to take the piss out of us.And we’re giving them plenty of ammunition and we have to concede that our away support is shite. If you think we have (conservative estimate) 10,000 home fans, if every home fan went to just two away games a season we’d be taking an average of 1,000 away to every game. This isn’t a big ask: some people go to nearly all the games, others don’t go at all but on aggregate it’d be a piece of piss and we managed it easily in the Championship. The cost issue goes away as we’re talking about going to two whole away games per season. Why should that be so hard to do for our supporters? To give the pub a miss for once and actually travel to support the boys? There’s only one way to redress the balance and that’s for Wiganers to get off their arses – home and away – and support the team. And the sad conclusion is that as is always the case, those that do go to games (home and away) will continue to take the flak for those that don’t. So we can sort this out between us – we just all need to make an effort. See you at Birmingham/Newcastle/Fulham/take your pick.
6 September 2010 at 8:13 pm #45574Agree completely. I have a season ticket but as a student I struggle to get to all the away games because of costs and last season I only managed to make it to Bolton, Birmingham, Hull, Notts County and Portsmouth.
It would be good if we targeted a few games where lots of fans especially off this board went to the games. It would be nice to maybe target a few games and maybe the club could help out like they have done in the past especially on trips to West Ham where tickets have either been cheap or the club have offered free coach travel.

When I was your age I went to loads of away games too.
Even up to a few seasons ago I went to virtually every one.
I didn’t moan about those who didn’t come along. I just either enjoyed myself, or felt depressed, depending on the result.
As life goes on the enthusiasm of youth goes away, and the responsibilities grow so that we can’t always do what we would like to do. I’d love to have nothing else to do (as I did when I was a student back in the Neolithic era) but go to matches. Life ain’t like that.
Please don’t lecture us about what we should do. Please do not ever dream of telling me to “get off my arse”. :x
The papers are never going to change their view that “we are badly supported, and that is because we’re a rugby town”. Get over it. If you want to go to every game then do so. Give them a cheer for me too.
But when you get to my age, then you can possibly think about lecturing people. But you’ll find that it isn’t worth it – because no-one listens.
6 September 2010 at 9:26 pm #45579I went to Stoke, Aston Villa and Everton away last season so I’m doing my bit.
By far the best part of away games is the Balti pies, love them. They have them at most places besides the JJB/DW.
Oh and when we win it’s not bad either.
