I can’t believe some of the sh!t being posted on this site today. I have got a few things I want to get off my chest:

Moses has not shown (yet) that he is capable of being a first team player at Wigan. We started with him at Bolton and he looked way out of his depth. Now, does this remind you of a certain James McCarthy? We brought him on against Utd at home and he looked rubbish BUT with a bit of work and guidance he’s now one of our best players. Surely this is what Martinez is planning with Moses and I would hope everybody will understand and agree with that as it seems quite clear!

Scotland was far better than Rodallega last night so why does he get all the criticism? He put in a decent performance in my eyes and although he played a few stray passes and maybe should have scored he worked his socks off and hit the target more often than not which is more than I can say for Hugo. I like Hugo, he’s a fan favorite and on his day a good player but the fact is Scotland is an easy target and our fans (majority) made their minds up on him straight away. He’s called fat, lazy, slow, etc and he’s none of those. Granted he isn’t blessed with blisstering pace and he’s not the best striker in the world but he’s a Wigan player and as long as he puts that shirt on we should be behind him! Rodallega is cr@p so why isn’t he getting any stick?

The performance on a whole last night wasn’t as bad as people make out. If we had drawn 0-0 with a big 4 team playing like we did last night people would have been raving on here saying we were fantastic. The fact is almost every Wigan fan expected us to beat Pompey, like we had a god given right to but it was never going to be easy. A point is a point and we are now almost safe in my eyes. Either 1 more win or 2 draws should see us home as that would mean Hull/West Ham/Burnley have to win 3 of their last 4 and that just won’t happen.

Almost a sell out on Sunday and with the way our season has gone thus far I wouldn’t bet against us beating Arsenal.

“The performance on a whole last night wasn’t as bad as people make out. If we had drawn 0-0 with a big 4 team playing like we did last night people would have been raving on here saying we were fantastic”

Just a couple of things about this particular point you made:
      1) We weren’t playing a top 4 side – that’s the whole point. We were playing an already relegated team that had been decimated by injuries & financial constraints. At home. They’re a team who have conceded nigh on 2 goals a game on average & in 2 games against em we haven’t scored once including last night against such a poor scratch side with our full strength squad. Yes if we’d been playing Man Utd’s full strength side & had as much possession & got a 0-0 draw We’d have all been pleased but we didn’t. We played Portsmouth’s B team
      2) Despite that all we really had to show for 68% of the possession against a bunch of reserve & youth team players was a few long range shots on target & one from closer in from Scotland. The performance was awful & looked devoid of pace, power, commitment, passion & countless things necessary for a half decent side

That said, I agree with you about Scotland as mistakes he makes seem to get slaughtered by the crowd & on here but mistakes by others get glossed over. Reminds me of the crowd favourite McCulloch v crowd boo boy Teale in our Championship days.
That said, I can understand people’s frustration coz he quite clearly isn’t good enough. You could tell that from the moment he first stepped out for us & no amount of commitment is gonna change that. I think people are venting their frustrarion at Bobby’s poor signings (& he was a flagship one) coz it feels wrong to em to turn on a latics playing legend

With regards to Moses, he may well nto be ready but I think the point I made when we signed him still applies. Bobby signed him and said pretty much straight away that he wouldn’t be ready for a while. Now bearing in mind that we have been in a relegation battle pretty much all season to sign someone knowing they aint gonna be ready to start until next season (without bringing in a temporary signing alongside him to play in his position) was an ill thought out & almost naive move – i.e. what we had wasn’t working that well so to change it he brings somebody in who he isn’t expecting to start or take anybody’s place so in effect our starting XI isn’t enhanced

      Great post Alex, spot on.

I think there has been a big over reaction by many people and I couldn’t believe the booing last night. As if things aren’t tense enough at the moment, some of our fans increase the low morale by booing the team off.

Last night was always going to be a tense affair regardless of what team Portsmouth put out and I wouldn’t say I agree with the team the manager put out, but the fact of the matter is that we didn’t lose and we picked up what could be a valuable point and edged a little bit further away from the drop zone. We have our destiny in our own hands and, as you quite rightly pointed out, another two or three points will probably do it.

Let us not forget the situation we found ourselves in just prior to Mr Jewell’s departure. We are five points clear with a slightly better goal difference than Hull and Burnley and we play Hull at home and are more than capable of getting at least a draw at West Spam with all the pressure their fans will put on them.

So let’s get behind the team and give them the best chance of staying up with our vocal support, not booing them!

PS – hope Scharner’s pathetic performance last night will see him dropped to the bench. Moses in from start please Bobby.

I take your point regarding the performance but what I was getting at more than anything was the fact we didn’t play badly but didn’t play particularly well. I believe we did enough to win the game and were unlucky not to. I also believe we took control of the game right from the off but had little to show for it at the end. The stats show it as all Wigan but the score shows an even game. We are starting to become a poorer version of Liverpool in regards to controlling and dominating teams, having all the ball but not taking chances. This is maybe the Spanish style with both Benitez and Martinez having similar tactics but the fact remains (in my eyes) Bobby is the right man for the job, he just needs to sign the players to take the club forward with him in charge and I will only judge him after the January transfer window next season (he will still be here, mark my words)!

As for Scotland, I believe he puts in the effort but has struggled in front of goal, maybe this is a confidence issue or maybe he just isn’t good enough but he doesn’t deserve any more stick than the likes of Hugo after last nights performance.

I disagree with what you’re saying about Martinez signing Moses. If you want to sign a player, whether it’s for now or the future you can’t hang around and risk another team stepping in. He knows he can guide Moses into being a top player, just like he’s done with McCarthy and when you don’t have a high transfer budget you have to make decisions and Martinez decided to sign Moses.

P.S. I forgot to mention Scharner in my post, I thought he acted like a child when he was subbed and I hope, hand on heart I never see him in a Wigan shirt again. His attitude stinks and the fact he’s not good enough in midfield or defence as he proved last night and at Fulham!

Alex I agree with it in the most-part. The statement that Rodallega is crap is untrue, just that he isn’t that good.
The other point that I disagree with is Scotland being better than Rodallega in said game…He got Villain of the match/worst rating in more than one paper aswell.

Scotland isn’t upto Premiership standards, he shouldn’t be put in the firing line when he is so obviously struggling.

He’d be far more effective coming on in the last 15 minutes, after N’Zogbia, Rodallega and Moses had already run the legs off the defenders.

Id rather put Moreno there for the 15 minutes than Scotland… Give Scotland 2 minutes of normal time maybe

Think we need a reality check here

We were playing a team who
                were already relegated
                played their reserves
CAN YOU IMAGINE US PLAYING OUR RESERVES WE WOULD BE ON FOR A HAMMERING

PFC INVITED US TO SCORE AND WE COULDNT

If we can’t beat Pompey’s reserve team then we deserve to go down. I just hope that we improve for the rest of the season, because on that performance, everyone will d1ck us 5-0.

And Rodallega isn’t cr@p, this is just a typical over reaction after a defeat, he’s good for us, but ever since Arsenal have supposedly been after him everyone thinks that he should be good enough for them. But the truth is he isn’t good enough for Arsenal and they’re probably not interested in signing him atall. Just think are there many (if any) strikers out there that we could realistically sign that are any better?

Duke, we dominated the game. The majority of it was played in the pompey half. They very rarely threatened going forward. This is not because of their reserves playing but because they came to sit back be stubborn and frustrate us.
We had absolutley no space to play and break them down. It wasnt a bad performance, just we couldn’t break through. We should have been bombarding the box with crosses but Nzog and Rod dont know what one of those are!!! That is the only way we would have got anything.

The thing that frustrates me the most is our inability to get bodies in the box, we get forward well enough but when a player looks to deliver a killer ball, there’s usually one Wigan player in the box surrounded by five defenders.

This is because we now play a 6-4 formation. Scharner was the deeper, more centrally positioned of the “attacking” 4 and the two wider players are chained to the touchline with Scotland as the lone “attacking spearhead” :)

4-2-3-1 works a treat if you are Liverpool, Real Madrid or Man U. Our current crop of players aren’t quite fluid enough to play it well, in my view.

Wilmslow I have two points to make

1 Neither Charles or Hugo are playing on the right side, when they get the ball there instinct is to come inside on there stronger foot. This has two disadvantages one we become really narrow especially with five in midfield, it gets to crowded and also especially in Charles case it means he has to beat the full back at least twice to get away from him.

2 With only one striker I use the term very loosely in Scotlands case as he is absolute shoite (but thats for another thread) even if you get a cross in there is no chance of him getting on the end of it so whats the point. And in my opinion thats why Hugo and Charles try and do to much as they have no confidence in there fellow striker.

Remember Rodallegas best game and a stunning goal at Villa?
Rodallega had been played on the left wing for a long time, but this game he wasn’t.
This season, the hope was that Rodallega would carry on what Zaki started. Would Martinez have had Zaki on the wing?
It’s constantly said and reported Wigan fans booing the team, It isn’t the team, it’s the manager.
