I read somewhere further down that a member had lost his appitite for the game, this made me think and hes right,im the same,im not that bothered anymore and thats against everything ive been brought up with.
My dad used to take me to wigan rovers when i was in the pram,my grandad was chairman,we went all over watching football combination football, winter green was in my blood,i cant remember the games,i can remember that smell,it was a football smell, from that point on i was football mad,ive since played for some decent teams inc wigan rovers in the west lancs when it was still a good league, garswood in the mid cheshire and north west counties, finishing up back in the wigan ammi league, ending up coaching kids football. Its fair to say im a football man.
These last 5 seasons tho, apart from the 1st season and some pick out games since then, have picked away at my love of the game, before then away days on arkys and the train with successful results kept me football mad.
Even the social sides gone, pre prem all the lads were out for an away game, a home game was usually a day sesh ending in pemps, its virtually all gone, a home game is match and home more often than not, away games are just a day on the lash travelling upto newcastle no tkt just watching in a geordie pub, no ones interested in the game anymore.
Its not that i dont want the lads to win i do,ive just lost interest in paying over inflated costs sat in an obscure section of a ground being told how to watch the game by men in yellow coats…im not even going to start on the refs.
So has the enjoyment gone,is it down to prem football thats drained football fans like me.

Couldnt agree more matey, I have watched this club since 1969-70 season and was at every home game in the dark days even tho it was a 200 mile round trip from Nuneaton. For me its not us being in the Prem and struggling its the fact that at the highest level of the game there seems to be so much corruption. Look whats going on with the world cup bid. There is no fairness in the game anymore and the smaller clubs dont have an earthly of making up the ground when the media bankroll Utd, Chelsea etc. Can any of you tell me the last game Utd played in the F A cup which wasnt televised? I love football and Wigan Athletic has been my whole life and its killing me to see us fail to win week in week out. The cost of following your club especially away has become too expensive for most people. My last trip to the Emirates with coach fare, ticket price, overnight stay and beer money cost in access of 400 quid ok we went a bit mad on the ale but still its a lot to spend on one away game. I was an England member until they dis-banded the old England members club and came up with “Team England” and now I wont even watch the national side on tele. Its always been fun watching the Latics home and away but now that fun has gone somehow and its as tho its become a chore. Ive not lost my passion for the game yesterday i went to watch Shevvy v Winstanley and it is great to see honest lads playing their hearts out giving everything. I know ill get slated on here for this but i doubt my passion for going to watch the Latics home and away will return until we have been relegated and left the circus thats the Premier League behind.

Thats nothin, i remember sitting in t’gutter, before football was invented, wishing someone would invent it so i could watch it, with short trousers on with patches on the knees, where there was no material cos we where that poor, so i had patches on my knees, driving my hovis bile on t’bread run in 1874, with nothing to eat but a handful of hot gravel and a pan o’ duggy watter to wash it down, but we were happy, kicking a rolled up ball of newspaper round in shoes that had no soles or tops, only laces, and we coloured our feet black to pretend we had shoes with coal and could get a full chippy for 2d……………..

You make a much more valid point than the others. Are you sure it isn’t just you getting older that makes you not want to go out on the lash and that makes you want to go straight home??… If this is the case for many fans then something needs to happen to bring the love of the game back to the fans, it shouldn’t resort to certain people (Vat) wanting us to get relegated!

I think you are right there Griff to some extent.
I think us oldies can see the Premier League hype for what its worth, were the young’uns have not known anything different.
Everything was better in the old days, football, beer, worklife, TV etc…….but was it?????
We need the views of some under 25’s really to see what they think.
For what it’s worth I’m with the fed up brigade, with this media run hyped up shoite we’re watching these days.
I obviously still love my club, and want them to win every game they play, but am I enjoying it? Not that much to be honest.

I am an under 25 and here is my view…
I think I enjoyed it a lot more on the rise up. I used to love going to springfield park with my dad and a flask of Bovril :) .. Used to love going watching us playing in the old div. 2 and enjoyed the Championship too. Some of the people who are ‘fed up’ have good points, such as the fact that we dont really have anything to aim for except avoiding relegation and they might find it boring, but as for myself.. I still enjoy watching the lads and still go into all games with confidence. I am not fed up and would definitely NOT want us to get relegated as we went to watch them cimbing up the leagues to be here, so to say they want us to go back down is stupid IMO.

For me, it’s all about reinventing the matchday experience every few years. Once upon a time it was an afternoon out with my dad, flask of tea then a trip to the local newsagents afer the game for the Football Pink to find out all the other scores (no radio in our car back then). Later it was weekends on the lash.

I now have a whole new matchday experience, albeit by accident, that is far better suited to my advancing years.

Not only do I get to see the game through my own eyes, but I now have the experience of my twelve year old son.

We have a 320 mile round trip and as I work hard all week, I get some quality time with him before he becomes a moody teenager.

We leave around 10am and then stop off for a proper breakfast at the services. Back in the car and Five Live all the way up (Fighting Talk, early kick offs, etc.) listening to his views on all things football, especially Latics. Trust me, twelve years olds know every football fact going!

Arrive at the ground and get some food, meet relatives, put a bet on, etc. Maybe even a couple of pints if I’m staying over.

Watch the match, listening to the comments of my football mad son, joining in with a few of the chants/songs.

                    Half-time cuppa.

Second half and usually disappointment, but every now and then a piece of magic and we win.

Drive home with a large family size pack of Revels (I hate the caramels and he hates the coffees, so there’s lots of window opening and spitting out sweets), listening to Five Live again and laughing at some of the muppets calling in.

Services for dinner (sorry tea). Always bump into a few fans from other teams and have some good chats. Ocassionally bump into other Latics fans which is a real bonus given our numbers. If he’s up for it sometimes take a detour and go for a curry.

Arrive home and see how much wife and daughter have spent out shopping all day.

Kids to bed, Match of the Day on tele and couple of beers from the fridge.

Fall asleep on sofa during/after MOTD.

                    Oh to be 25 again!

                    #51454

Exactly, you can never bring back the excitement of youth when it comes to football, the romance of the cup you name it, always looks better when your young.

The other thing that no man u or liverpool fan will ever get is the rise to fame of Wigan from the lowest ebb of the kenny swain era. The buzz of buying players for a million, the constant winning and getting trophys, having to beg to get tickets for away games. The media lovey of Plucky Wigan.

No matter how we try we will never get that back.

You have to renew your routine and enjoy it, dont let the bstards let you down.

                    :)
