There have been some strange results this season and the very fact that Utd are clearly not the force they were and the fact that City are only 3 pts ahead of them makes me wonder whether the standards are dropping ! Chelsea are in transition and clearly struggling so far and Arsenal despite getting over their initial blip still don’t seem to be anywhere near the Arsenal of old.Are Spurs really that good ? Or have the usual top 4 suspects lost that grip they had on the Champions League places ? Liverpool have slipped gradually over the last few seasons and the likes of Stoke and Newcastle have become contenders for European spots ! Its not often you see a team who is 8th in the Prem with a goal difference of -9 !! In my view there are 12 very mediocre teams out of 20 and that surly is a far cry from what the powers that be would have wished for when the Prem was conceived !!

5 January 2012 at 4:15 pm #77002I dont think the standard has dropped – more like the bar has been raised by those with enough financial clout to not have to worry about anything other than where in the top 6 they will finish. Its a very closed-shop. In the previous 5 seasons, only Everton & Villa have made it into the top 6.
In August, you would have got pretty crap odds on the top 6 being made up of Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs & Liverpool. In fact, I’d be surprised if you could get good odds on it being the same 6 next season.
5 January 2012 at 4:29 pm #77006I would say the standard has dropped for sure but that goes back to a few of my points of football being in a mass decline in England. Money has taken over and crushed the league as a competition for European places. There is only 1 place up for grabs because even Stoke have a mega rich owner. Full credit must go to Newcastle because they are making a fist of it in the face of adversity. In the eyes of the Premier League, Ourselves, Bolton, Swansea e.t.c are not worthy of this league and the Leeds, Nottm Forest and Leicester’s of this world should be here instead, They have big stadiums and big attendances but they also have or had a lot of debt and paid the ultimate price. Teams only eligible to play in the league can be there. If Leicester did come back up i would revel in them getting relegated again just to see Lineker’s face.
I love rugby league but the one think i hate is teams being elected into divisions. If that happened in football we would be in League 1, And that is just because of our stadium.
5 January 2012 at 5:31 pm #77014I would say the standard at the top has definitely dropped thus making the league slightly more competitive.
Very soon when City really get their act together they’ll be head and shoulders above everybody else. All the other top clubs can’t afford the best in the world and have to rely on cheaper options or young prospects. All summer United were linked with Schneider and everyone knows they’re crying out for that type of player , but they can’t afford him and he doesn’t come. The fact that United have gone out of the Champions League at this early stage and to Benfica & Basle says a thousand words. The days of 3 English clubs in the Champions League semis is well gone.

chelsea’s investment over the years and still no champs league trophy, if moss city think they can just turn up and win it then think again. they will not win the champs league by the time i retire (another 35 years ish). They WILL win countless prem leagues (may even get to utd’s total b 4 i pop my clogs, but their bubble will eventually burst. Just like our prem league bubble, good while it lasts but be prepared that it WILL NOT last forever. results this season suggest that actually it’s got a lot stronger in depth:-
- QPR beating chelsea
toon beating utd
fulham beating ar se
rovers beating ar se & utd
Us outplaying chelsea
people talk about the top teams not being as strong. But what’s not to say it’s the lower teams getting “slightly” better and having a go at them???????

bullet points crap JAYT
5 January 2012 at 8:01 pm #77020- first
- second
- third
Bullet points work fine :)
6 January 2012 at 2:08 am #77035I don’t even know how to use these ” Bullet Points ” !!
The fact that we only have 2 out of 4 sides through to the knock out stage of Champions League speaks volumes ! The 2 absentees just happen to be 1st and 2nd respectively in the Prem at the moment and are favs to occupy those places come the end of the season !

You cant rule spurs out for second place imo
6 January 2012 at 2:34 am #77039If teams like Swansea and Norwich come up after buying third division players like Pilkington etc and make a fist of the prem then they must have done.
Loads of cr@p teams in my view and lets keep the faith because i dont thing the fight is over for us just yet! - QPR beating chelsea
