We have had some bad centre forwards in the past but this guy ranks amongst the worst, apart from a lucky goal at Barnsley he has never looked like scoring. I bet Norwich are laughing their socks off :P At least some of the others would run around like headless chickens at times and show some enthusiasm. This guy doesn’t look remotely interested the most animated he got tonight was a tiff with Dickov.
21 August 2013 at 2:46 am #119577If that’s a tongue in cheek post fair enough, but you must have been facing the wrong way in your seat. :P
I thought Holt was our best player by a country mile. He had two great efforts in the first 20 mins or so getting on the end of two crosses that Kone and Di Santo would have been 4 yards away from getting a touch.
He ran the channels superb and challenged and won his fair share of headers, only to find our mid-fielders 10 yards off the pace.
When Fortune came on and supported him, they caused havoc between um. The Dickov incident showed that he has a bit of passion for our club.
I was not over the moon when we signed Holt to be honest, but his performance tonight has convinced me he will be our trump card this season.
I honestly cant believe you posted that!
From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!21 August 2013 at 3:04 am #119579Correct jr. How much better was holt when paired with fortune though?
21 August 2013 at 3:09 am #119581AnonymousThought he did very well put himself about knocked a few down held the ball up & linked play, and generally worked his socks off.
21 August 2013 at 3:12 am #119582Sorry JR i have to disagree. Yes he was ok for the first 20 mins like you said, after that he had a poor game IMO & i agree with bronxbomber. Things did improve once fortune came on.
21 August 2013 at 3:30 am #119584He’s a typical old fashioned centre forward – but he needs service.
The midfield was awful tonight.
Watson is hopeless. Hence off at half time. McCann was totally invisible and contributed nout.
McCarthy strolled around like he was awaiting the phone call from Everton.Totally disinterested.
McLean – a work in progress.
We only really came to life when Beajesour (Sorry for the spelling) came on and linked up with Maloney on the left hand side.
Never thought I’d hear a cheer for the introduction of Gomez.
Tonight was a real wake up call and I expect changes on Sunday.
A good point in the end though. Credit to them for the fightback
21 August 2013 at 3:58 am #119587I expected midfield to be our great strength this season. Coyle has even added McCann and McClean to the squad. We’ve seen everybody now except Fyvie.
What has happened to them? They play like total strangers – and they appear colour-blind too. Are they following a plan of some kind?
There already appears to be a willingness just to kick the ball in the general direction of Holt. So far, it hasn’t been very productive. Holt’s going to need much better support if it is going to succeed.
So far, we’ve played two promoted teams and the survivors Barnsley. I would have said that was a gentle introduction. Greater challenges are still to come.
21 August 2013 at 4:09 am #119589I dont think Coyle knows his best 11 yet and Holt was let down quite a few times with support play. We need to relearn how to play in the championship its tough, physically, and some of the play by Bournemouth and Doncaster was straight out of the 70s. Holt will come good when he knows who is going to be where and when during the game. As for the reference to old fashioned centre forward I think that is what we will need to do well in this league.
21 August 2013 at 4:10 am #119590Crainey past his sell by date , McCann awful, but when all said and done Coyle had players on the bench to come on and change the game so for me the buck lies with pencil legs for getting the starting line up tatics/team totally wrong.
And what’s with the 1/2 dozen crosses in the 2nd half been over hit ? Not one found the 6 yard box with 2 forwards waiting.
21 August 2013 at 11:21 am #119595thought that holt got bullied and muscled out of the game instead of vice versa , he ended up out on the right at times , jeans crosses are shocking , perch was like a fish out of water and mcarthy must be trying put off potential buyers , carson is suspect , referee standards are pretty dire to , but onwards and upwards personally don’t want be sat at top of league from the off , just tuck in nicely behind the leaders , knowbody ever won the league in august .

21 August 2013 at 2:24 pm #119603My main problem right now is the midfield 3.
If you pick any 3 from Watson, McArthur, McCarthy, McCann and Fyvie you have 3 players who almost the exact same in play style. None of them are particularly creative, they.re possession retainers and every teams needs one or two of them but right now we are playing 3 people to do that role and its overkill.
Gomez or Maloney (who is wasted on the right imo) would fit much better in to the midfield 3 as a more aggressive, creative player whilst the two behind clean up and keep the ball moving.
21 August 2013 at 8:35 pm #119638I largely agree. Coyle wants to change the mindset of the Wigan players as perpetual underdogs. Then why on earth doesn’t he send out a team with two forwards? We’re not playing Manchester United every week.
We’ve got plenty of midfielders – perhaps twelve is too many. And we’re apparently looking at Nick Powell too. Maloney isn’t a winger – we’ve got three of those – and it’s a waste to play him on the right. He worked well with Beausejour later on the left.
I suggest;
Two holding midfield players; from Watson, McArthur and McCarthy
One creative midfield player; from McCarthy, Maloney and Gomez
One winger; from Beausejour, McManaman and McClean
Two forwards; Holt and Fortune
We still have Espinoza, McCann, Fyvie and Redmond in reserve for midfield. I’m not sure where Powell would fit in.
We’ve also got four goalkeepers. But we seem to have run out of defenders already this season – there weren’t any on the bench last night.
21 August 2013 at 10:20 pm #119645Got to disagree about McCarthy I thought the lad worked his socks off but right he didn’t create much he needs mcarthur in their with him.

Must be 2 players with a 4 on their back.
The one I was watching only broke into a trot about twice all night. ;)
