Somebody on another thread rates him in the top 3 ! No disrespect intended but I consider that pure nonsense ! I would rate him maybe 10th or 11th best on the current batch of Prem keepers. How do you lot rate him and lets have your top 5 keepers !
Got to disagree I think Ali is one of the best in the league. He is having a bad patch at the minute but I think we would be planning a trip to Peterborough etc if it wasn’t for him. The mistake he made against Reading overshadowed the fact that he made a world class save at 1 nil to keep us in the game.
1. Hart
2. Mignolet
3. Friedel
4. Al Habsi
5. Howard
A few years ago I would of had Reina and Cech at the top of the pile but I both think they have gone off the boil to an extent.

I agree that Hart is possibly the best in the prem at the moment. Although I do rate Al Habsi I wouldn’t put him in the top 5, he’s just a good shot stopper really little unstable otherwise. Just a difference of opinion that’s all. Don’t get me wrong i’m very happy for him to be between our posts, but I think there are plenty better.
Completely agree regarding Cech and Reina, they have gone off the boil.. But to put Al Habsi ABOVE them is ridiculous.

We’ll agree to disagree, I honestly think Al Habsi has been better than these 2 over the past 2 seasons. I dont get how you can see otherwise especially regarding Reina unless you are just looking at the name or going off Football Manager’s latest stats!

Ha I don’t and never have played Football Manager ;) .. To be honest my disagreement was predominantly at the fact you put Habsi above Cech, as Reina has been absent for a large period of the season, but when Reina is playing, he would still be above Al Habsi in the rankings, in my opinion.
De Gea wouldn’t even make my top 10, let alone 5. Friedel has been a superb keeper throughout his career, but his best days are probably behind him now. Exluding recent weeks, Al Habsi would be in my top 5 without a shaddow of a doubt. Just take a look at his penalty saving record last season. In the next year or two Joe Hart will probably be the best goalkeeper in the Premiership by a country mile. As for catagorising keepers in to a top 5, it’s a little difficult as obviously teams with good defences are going to appear to have greak goalkeepers.

Slightly contradictive. De Gea plays for Utd (Team with decent defense) and you state that he wouldn’t be in your top 10. Yet you say that GK’s look good when play in front of good defenses)
Both teams get chances every game, I don’t think GK’s look good because they play for a good team, I think they play for a good team because they ARE good and have already proven so. (In most cases I believe)
What’s with all the Ali bashing from everyone recently?
De Gea was being called a flop last season, and both Cech and Hart have been prone to a cock up or two over the past year.
goodpost
Couldn’t agree more.
As for opposition:
De Gea: £19m for what … potential (to be confirmed). Recently kept out the Utd team by Lindersgaard …says it all. Ability to command his area – absolutely non-existent.
Cech and Hart have both dropped more than the one b*llock for both club and country in the past 2 seasons (if you care to cast your mind back). Remarks along the lines of Cech past his best (TV pundit?) and Hart too full of himself /off the boil (R Keane)
Actually Jamesc, the fact that I don’t rate De Gea DESPITE having a good defence in front of him actually enforces my opinion. The point I was making is that a goalkeeper would look better in a good defence than they would in a rubbish one. Nothing to do with comparing two different keepers abilities.
De Gea has come on in leaps and bounds and will be one of the best in the World one day. That save he made from Mata’s freekick against Chelsea was superb. Szczesny and Krul ( Not in my top 5 ) are two keepers also with age on their side, both with big futures !
No Al Habsi knocking here Johnny. Because of the recent Al Habsi debate and whether some of our fans would have any other keeper over him, I thought we would have a top 5 keeper opinion poll ! Naming no names, someone rated him in the top 3 in the Prem which in my opinion is pure blind faith ! I would say he is rated about 10th and that there are 9 keepers who I personally would have between the sticks ahead of him. The debate recently had most agreeing that he is good for us ( Circumstantial financially ) but would he attract any of the clubs with the young keepers that I have already mentioned in this thread ? As for the older keepers who I still rate, would he get a sniff in at their respective clubs once they step down ? I would say not ! Just to reiterate, I am not knocking him but I do not think he is the keeper that some might think he is but as earlier agreed ( By some ) he is good for us !

That may be, if he is, he’ll have come a LONG, LONG way.
But we’re talking in the present tense, NOW.
Has still been found wanting on crosses this year (pretty much on a weekly basis last – think Wigan (DW – disallowed goal), Blackburn (OT), etc. etc.
Krul was in excellent form for Geordies last year. This year, not sure ..
Arsenal – haven’t had a top class goalie since David Seaman, as far as I can recall …
