from this cloud” are lyrics from one of my favourite bands and just about sums up how I feel about Wigan Athletic.

After watching our past teams of rejects and misfits in the Northern Premier League on freezing winters nights in the snow and rain, I realise how fortunate I am. I have a fantastic seat, at a fantastic stadium, and watch world class footballers in exchange for peanuts. All this has been made possible by people, past and present, who truly love football and Wigan. When I think of some of my fellow supporters, who have sadly passed away, I can’t help but think that they would have been so proud (as I am) of our achievements.

I find it difficult to relate to all those people who get upset when we sell our best players or lose heavily to a world class team. Wigan Athletic is a small town club with relatively few supporters who cannot compete on equal terms with most (if not all) Premier League teams. We have to be smarter, more enthustiastic, harder working and above all more prudent. Thanks to Dave Whelan and our present management setup we are all of these things. In the bad old days supporters would paint, clear snow, contribute to players wages and generally worry on a day to day basis whether we would still have a team the following season. Unfortunately, most of our present supporters have never suffered these hardships and it is therefore impossible for them to understand just how lucky we are.

Wigan Athletic has always sold it’s best players because we cannot afford to keep them. Figueroa may well go to Sunderland (if United, City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham etc don’t come in for him as well), but we will find someone else and probably sell him on as well. We will do this until we have a fan base large enough for us to do otherwise. After all these years (and a couple of glasses of wine) I am truly on cloud nine and “don’t wanna come back down”.

I hope this missive will help ease the pain of those who feel that we should be winning the Champions League, by putting things a little more into perspective.

Great post, owd ‘un – however, prepare to be called an idiot, and much worse, in return

PS, “how much is that doggy in the window?” is the favoured anthem of our transfer market obsessed friends on here [tin-hat smiley]

    Fully agree.

And we’ve done it for five seasons in a row.

There are a lot of people – now sadly gone – who, if you’d said to them “do you know one day we’ll be playing Manchester United and Liverpool and Arsenal in League games, and be way above Leeds and Nottingham Forest and Newcastle”, would have asked what we were drinking/smoking, chuckled, and said “gerron wi’ yer”.

And if you’d then told them that not only was it true, but that there were people who say they support Latics but were unhappy with how we were doing, would simply have shaken their heads.

good post matey, reading that brought back some memories. Most of the supporters who go today wouldnt no what hit them if we went back to the old days, going down to springy to cover pitch with straw and back the next to take it back off, going to meetings at the queens hall in town on how to save our great club, yeah i wonder how many would still come if they went through what we did.COME ON LIVE THE DREAM,WE ARE :D

Brilliant post ‘owd git’ every word you say is so true.
I lost my dad a few years ago before the revolution started. How proud would he be now to see his club where we are now.
A lot on here should take a deep breath and engage their brains before posting some of the crap they post.
Dave Whelan isn’t perfect, far from it, but I dread to think where we would be now if he hadn’t come along when he did.
I know the club is bigger than just one person, and we would have survived, but would we have had all the glory days we have had? I don’t think so.
We may have had another FRT or AWS sucess, and the odd Cup run, but would that really compare to playing the likes off MUFC LFC and Arsenal week in week out?
I don’t particulaly like the PL and all the bull that comes with it, but I don’t want to go back to playing the likes of Barnet etc either.
I sometimes yearn to visit Spotland or Gigg Lane for the big local Derbies, and one day we may be back there, but I am going to enjoy every minute of this while it lasts. We are Wigan Athletic and we are playing in the Premier League FFS
History is being made as we watch, and we are all part of it, lets get behind our great club and enjoy it all the way.
        COME ON WIGAN!!!!!!

You, Sir, have the memory of an elephant and, some might say……….other similar attributes, however, I still believe that to be folklore. I too am reminded of a famous quote, as Michelangelo once said…….

                …………..” Genius is eternal patience.”

Good to hear, at last, some positive spin and not very surprising coming from you Mr Owd. Not often you visit but when you do it is, as always, well worth the wait……….profound words indeed Sir and as a wine aficionado myself I empathise with your reasoning prowess, sometimes taking it with a much slower, gentile sport (a little willow and leather).

PS. My road time isn’t what it used to be……..Mrs Micky has hidden my ‘Steppenwolf’ LP
