Got a call last night (Wed 10 March) to say that one of my friends had been killed in a car crash on the Rainford Bypass. Devestating news. I was sick to the stomach.
He won’t mean anything to people on here, but his name is Steven Mitchell, and he was a very popular person in Old Skem. A lovely bloke. He worked as a DJ in the local area, and was very popular at Weddings, etc. He was a tireless charity worker, and only last week did 2 charity events, both for Haiti, and Help For Heroes. A nicer bloke you could not wish to meet. Honestly. Always smiling, and not an enemy to his name. A gentle giant of a bloke who would do anything for anybody. Skem has been rocked by this.
He was only 34, and leaves a young girlfriend, and a devastated family. ‘Mitch’, as he was known, was a madly fanatical Everton fan, and went all over the place to watch them. I only spoke to him on Tuesday, about our win over Liverpool. His last Facebook status was saying he was sorry to hear Chester City are no more. An hour or two later, he was killed. His car was in a collision with a tractor trailer, on the Rainford Bypass. He died instantly, we believe.
I, like many others, can’t get my head around it yet. Stunned, totally stunned. I am finding things that concerned me a few days ago, ever so trivial at the moment. Really feeling down. I think I am only posting this on here as a relief. Sorry.
I know that its no consolation at the moment but at least he wasnt in pain!
Hope that your feeling better soon!
Maybe seeing as he was such a tireless charity worker you could arrange something as a memorial/celebration of his life with the proceeds going to charity. If you need any help let us know!
I’ve already suggested it today, and I’m sure something will happen.
Steve was a really top guy. He was well in at Everton FC, knew the players, etc. He even went to Wayne Rooney’s 18th, a few years ago, I think. In fact, he told me about Rooney when he was 15 and amazing people at youth level. I’ve been on to Graeme Sharp at Everton today, and they are sorting something out as a tribute. A couple of his Everton mates are going to put a scarf and flowers down on his seat, next home game.
I had known him to go to the odd Latics game as well. Saw him at the Spurs game, last season. Just loved by everybody. Ran a kids football team (brought them to latics for matchday visits), who are devastated, and was respected by everyone. So tragic.
But yeah, hopefully something can be planned. I’ve already said I want to be involved.

Regardless of whichever team (or sport) anyone follows that is a sad story.
May he rest in peace.
Just try and think of all the good times you had together as friends I’m sure that’s how he would want it to be.
As you say somethings that seemed important previously maybe aren’t.
I knew Mitch too. He was a true gentleman and I never knew one person to say a bad word abou him. He will be missed by alot of people. He did so much work for charities and with the football team he coached.
It is just so sad that such a wonderful life has been cut short in such a terrible way.
Thanks everyone for your kind replies. Much appreciated.
One of our friends has made a superb tribute film, using a load of Mitch’s pictures of him with Everton players and legends, and from his trips to watch Everton. It has been passed on to Everton FC, via someone we know who is friends of Bill Kenwright, EFC Chairman, and I believe that they are going to screen it on Saturday on their big screens, before their home game with Horwich.
The soundtrack to it……is ‘Z Cars’, and truly, it will be a magnificent tribute to a great bloke, and someone who was definitely more than just a fan.
It’s a shame we are at home against Burnley, because I would have liked to have gone. A tribute is to be placed on his seat, as well. I have been torn as to whether to miss our game with Burnley, however I believe that Mitch would say to me “Support your team!” At 2.59 though, I shall be having a quiet moment to myself.
Thanks again, everybody.
JOJODISCO- PM ME PLEASE. How did you know Mitch? Cheers.
But as is usual, a few squabbles have started between certain people and it’s all gone a bit too far now, in my mind. There’s things gone on which have disappointed me. But at the end of the day, the tragedy of what has happened, is still there. He was a lovely bloke, full of fun, life, and energy, and he genuinely loved running his kids team.
Sadly, Everton won’t be screening the video that was made, due to “copyright reasons”, or so they say. But I don’t get it, because they were all Mitch’s own photo’s, so surely the copyright was HIS? Apparently it’s something to do with certain players he has had his picture took with. In a word, it’s a load of shyte.
I don’t think I’ve ever met anybody as daft about their club, as he was. Fanatic really wasn’t the word. It was a running joke between a few of his mates, that because he went to Everton games in full bench gear, he was almost like the manager! My mate tells me that he had the most unbelievable collection of football memorabilia, with signed items from Pelé, Maradona, etc.
The funeral is next Wednesday, 10.30am at St Helen’s Crem. Sadly, I don’t think I’m going. Different reasons, but the main thing is its will be a big free-for-all, and I can see some trouble happening. If they’d had a church service, I’d have attended that, but I don’t want to go to the Crem.
