We dont seem to be farting around at the back as much these days, uppin the pace and being slightly more direct.
Down t`Whelan i reckon!
15 November 2010 at 11:41 am #51072More likely to do with the players confidence and geting more used to playing this way.
15 November 2010 at 11:44 am #51073Its been interesting to note in the last 2 games that (for the first time I can remember) when Latics have been on level terms but on top in possession etc.. that Bobby seems to have sent somebody on with the express intent of stretching the game & being more direct
Could it be that after 15 months he has learnt his lesson??
regardless its an encouraging sign, just as the slowing down of our goals conceded rate & the lack of collapses when behind have been
15 November 2010 at 12:01 pm #51077Not so sure it’s any more direct, just more of the same but at a faster tempo. I certainly didn’t see much of a reduction in playing it out from the back.
But that’s maybe what you mean by more direct.
15 November 2010 at 12:49 pm #51081Just to clarify (& I think you got the gist Griff) that by more direct & didn’t mean lumping it out from the back to the centre forward I meant less sideways passing & more getting the ball at a players feet & getting em to run at the opposition at pace
15 November 2010 at 12:58 pm #51082there’s been so many examples of goals scored this week by players turning round and running at the back 4. Do you know, i may have been heard to shout occasionally “just f@##kin run at ’em” when a big chasm opens up in midfield, and we play a pass 4 yards sideways!
You can see the confidence building a bit now. Who’s next up?………….. Oh
15 November 2010 at 2:04 pm #51085Tufty – I don’t believe for one minute that you’d ever shout anything as crude as that
Or me for that matter

Let me get this right. When it was going wrong it was all Martinez’s fault? Now that we are showing signs of having a half decent team it is down to Whelan?
Performances like the Liverpool game on Wednesday are nothing new under Martinez. We put in many a good performance last season. They were just overshadowed by some absolute shockers.
Its his team, his way and his credit. Fully deserved it is.
15 November 2010 at 6:00 pm #51094“We put in many a good performance last season”
I’d disagree with that. 6 or 7 good performances + 10 amazing minutes against Arsenal (the previous 80 were as bad as owt that had gone before it) doesn’t in my book make for many good performances
“Its his team, his way and his credit. Fully deserved it is”
That I’d fully agree with. Things are by and large much improved & lessons seems to now be being learnt. progress is still far too slow for my liking & there is still a hell of a long way to go before I’ll be convinced that he’s the right man for the job but he deserves credit for the progress that has been made this season
15 November 2010 at 6:19 pm #51096Whelan has stated publically that he `wanted a big man up front`….
Hence the signing of Di Santo.

Last season we had 14 points fron the opening 13 games. This season we have 14 points from the opening 13 games. I’d hardly call that progress.
After 14 games we had 17 points, so lets see how much more progress is made next Saturday.

You’d better check the results against teams mate rather than games played. Just remind me how many points we got from OT last season?
