Sadly Ian passed away last night surrounded by his family and loved ones, he was 85. I hope that the club will recognise this at the next home game and give him a well deserved minutes applause for all he did for this little club. rest in peace Ian !
7 October 2017 at 8:27 pm #162398RIP! Thoughts with his family. Ian mcneill was my first manager when i started supporting latics.
7 October 2017 at 8:32 pm #162400Mr McNeill, you lead us to the promised land of league football in 1978 and we will all be indebted to you for that, and for helping to make possible everthing that has happened since that day.
Thank you Sir and Rest in Peace.
7 October 2017 at 8:38 pm #162401Ian made 41 appearances for Southend Utd between 1962 and 1964 and so this Saturday coming would be a perfect, fitting tribute!
7 October 2017 at 8:42 pm #162402Ian actually predicted our meteoric rise to the top flight back in 1979!
7 October 2017 at 10:11 pm #162411Taken the gloss off todays brilliant result RIP marrer a massive part of the incredible journey.
7 October 2017 at 10:36 pm #162412In charge during really important moments for the club as we came into the football league, massively happy childhood memories, thankyou Ian.
7 October 2017 at 11:45 pm #162413Sad news indeed.
Wasn’t watching when Ian was around unfortunately. Sure the club will recognize his fantastic efforts for us. RIP to the man who brought us league football.
His birth year is apt really.9 October 2017 at 2:00 pm #162450I find it quite odd that there is no mention of Ian’s passing on the official Wigan Athletic website? Both Chelsea and Ross County have paid tribute to Ian on their respective websites but nothing from Wigan! I hope he is going to be acknowledged this Saturday!
10 October 2017 at 8:20 pm #162482Ian McNeill was such a nice man and I attended the Q&A sessions he gave in the main stand at Springfield Park before they ever became popular. For me who has watched Latics for 60years he is in the top 3 of our greatest ever managers alongside Gordon Milne and Paul Jewell (subjective I know but that’s my opinion)
I really hope he gets the ovation he richly deserves on Saturday.
Rest in Peace Ian
10 October 2017 at 8:28 pm #162484Amen to all that…..Allan Brown was the first manager I (vaguely) remember, but Ian McNeill was the first I properly related to and of course he came back to lead us into league football.
A key factor influencing this club’s development.11 October 2017 at 12:40 am #162491I find it quite odd that there is no mention of Ian’s passing on the official Wigan Athletic website? Yeah I’ve seen it. My Brother sent a rather angry email to the club, not sure if it was his actions that prompted some reaction but it did seem rather ( Ahem ) coincidental! ;)
14 October 2017 at 10:39 pm #162551An excellent tribute today, I bet the family were very touched by that. Good to see his old players there. Programme feature as well, good, appropriate gesture and tribute.
15 October 2017 at 12:27 am #162563Totally agree dnr. Personally, I do prefer the minutes silence though.
