I’ve been seen at the DW as well so I must be in with a shout!
I fully expect both Martinez and Jones to be there next season.[/quote]
I’ll be very surprised if that isn’t the case.
The only think that might make him leave is the academy and other development plans being put on hold because of relegation – which is a distinct possibility.
Often with relegation there is need for change of strategy, direction, different ideas, new faces, style etc. with us that isn’t the case and continuity would seem sensible so therefore graham jones is really the only logical candidate.

If what he’s said in the past carries any kind of credibility, and I consider Martinez to be an honourable man, I just can’t see him leaving the club in a worse position (status wise rather than finacially) than when he joined.
I agree that should the academy etc be put on hold that might change his mind but I expect Whelan to have a real go at trying to get back to the Premiership next season, certainly whilst the parachute payments are in place.
or Graham Jones ? (with a good assistant) at least he knows the club and has an affection with Wigan and understands the club and it’s fans.
It’s Graeme not Graham!! ;)
Putting me being pedantic to one side, I have a big aversion to assistants being asked to step up into the manager’s job.
I’ve seen it twice during my time following Latics, once when Colin Greenall stepped up & once when Hutchings replaced Jewell – both times were unmitigated disasters & if Bobby does go, I wouldn’t wanna see Jones being asked to take his place.
I’m sure there are times when it has worked but its not just at Latics where it’s failed – I read from some football pundit some time back that a lot of people reckon it is down to the need to change from the relationship you had with the players as an assistant to the type of relationship a manager needs to have with them. Assistants interact more with the players on a day to day basis in almost a matey fashion whereas the manager is more distant & doesn’t develop the same type of bonds as he’s the one that needs to be hard nosed enough to drop em. A lot of assistants struggle to change the dynamic of their relationship with the players & so struggle in the managerial role
That’s what I’ve read anyway – could be complete b0ll0x
Hutchings was unlucky with key injuries, I’m sure we topped the premier league at one point under his management. When he got sacked, it coincided with the return of several players and us starting to win games again.
