The Spanish national side seems to be Martinez’s style template – 4-2-3-1, everything down the middle. So if Spains decent footballers can produce football as dull as that they showed today and throughout this tournament, its no wonder our mediocre players do the same.

4-2-3-1 will be the death of football.

Especially if the other team doesn’t want to play. In that case it can be a bit dull.

I only watched the match on and off tonight but Spain looked as if they could have had a ponful.

There’s an awful lot of teams in this World Cup played that style, some of which had players as mediocre as ours, but who managed to look decent.

British players generally aren’t yet used to it, so it will be a team full of ‘Carlos Kick-A-Balls’ (did you coin that phrase recently?) until the English get out of the mentality of constantly trying to get the ball to the line and crossing it to the big lad in the middle.

I’m not saying 4-4-2 is the answer – that, rightly is called one dimensional at times. But the Spanish way is equally, if not more one dimensional. They play with no width, everything is funnelled down the middle cos the wingers are on the wrong sides, everything in front of the back 4 looking for a shot. They don’t use their pace because its all two touch football. I just don’t see any variety in their game.

Look how easily Inter defended that in the CL final

I would take the success rate of Spain, even if it isnt that exciting…

I did use Carlos Kickaball, but it was Alan Sugar who used it first when he was chairman at Spurs
