There are 92 full time professional clubs in the Football League, plus another 68 full time or part time professional clubs in the three Conference Leagues. Add to that over 7000 semi-professional and amateur teams representing towns and boroughs in the football league ‘pyramid’.
Wigan is the 92nd largest town/city in Britain, and despite being one of the newest clubs ever to play in the Football League – let alone in the Premier League, having narrowly survived bankruptcy, the town’s football team has been in the top 20 since 2005 – above the famous, well established and well supported teams from much larger catchment areas such as East London, Sheffield, Nottingham, Derby, Leicester, Leeds, Hull, Birmingham and Southampton.
People don’t boo the size of the town. They don’t sit outside the Mayor’s office telling him to build more houses. They boo Martinez because he doesn’t know what he is doing and sending us down.
I suspect Martinez know more than people would like to give him credit, I also suspect that he knows the problems faced with the team and will be trying to fix them.
As for sending us down, according to reports on here most of our team is gash so we will more than likely go down anyway.
We will have to wait and see, in the meantime we will all be supporting the players on teh pitch :)
Martinez knows what he is doing make no mistake about it!
Makes me laugh whe people criticise his positivity… what do you want him to say??? “lets face it were punching above our weight and its going to happen sooner or later?”
If you want an example of this look at how he is handling Kirkland…. the lad is probably one of our top earners and Martinez is doing everything he can to get him off the books , personally I would go one step further and take the number 1 off him at start of the season but maybe that would be disrespectful considering he has been good to this club not only on the pitch but in his “charity” work around the town…
but putting that all aside hes not fit to train fully and we cant depend on him to be available all the time.
Yosser, congratulations for taking a seven word sentence from a hundred word post and using it totally out of context.
In summary – the success of the town’s football team is not proportional to its perceived standing or the size of the town and catchment area. The club is far exceeding all expectations by even reaching the Premier League, let alone avoiding relegation.
Be disappointed that the team have not won, but for Christ’s sake booing? Get a bit of perspective.

Mr Standish
some people on here wouldn’t understand perspective even if you drew it out on a large piece of paper for them.

Christ Phil, I know you’re a window cleaner and therefore have an affinity with glass but having an entire car made out of it is just going to far, mate!

It’s not a car Phil, it’s a fighter jet. I park it next to Mutty’s.
