I have just watched the highlights. Though villa had the lions share of possession, attacking etc., we ourselves had a couple of chances & had they have been taken…..who knows.

In fairness, grealish goal was outstanding. Nothing could be done about it. It wasn’t as if we lost by a stupid &/or defensive error. Joyce was 2 minutes away from earning a good away point.

I agree, joyce does need to start playing players in their natural positions. Wildschutt is not a striker in the memory of man/woman. Also a bit more attacking play & going for it wouldn’t go amiss either. As i said, having now seen the highlights, i feel slightly better, but still, ever so frustrated

I thought we matched Villa all the way yesterday OK we didn’t create a ponfull of chances, but neither did they.
The last two games have given me some optimism that with a few additions in January and WJ getting his feet fully under the table, we will be fine.
That Villa team cost a fortune and they played with a minimum of two sometimes 3 up front but still created jack shyte. Can the one up front blah, blah, blah brigade explain that!
I would suggest it was because we won the midfield battle, just as Garswood allured to.

        From Matlock to ManU
        What a journey!

Cannot agree..we were p*** poor…bring his own players in ? Don’t you think that maybe a little too late ? Haven’t we got a few games to play before the window opens?..He is another managerial experiment that at present looks ill judged. How many teams in this league do you reckon would play no strikers and leave their best option on the bench ?..And Wildschutt as striker……come on !!!

It’s not exactly his fault that he hasn’t got the players he feels can fit into his way of playing. Just like it’s not his fault that he hasn’t been able to add to the squad. Too late or not he inherited a bit of a motley crew and has had to make do and mend. I really do think it’s only fair to judge him properly when he’s had the chance to at least partly mould his own team.

Why do people keep going on about waiting till the January window so he can bring in players that fit his style of play? These are not children but a squad of adult, experienced professionals. As such they should be capable of playing in the style that the manager instructs. I think it unlikely that any professional player would deliberately go out and play contrary to their mangers instructions. So either the manager’s tactics are the problem or the players are just not good enough. You watch the games and make up your own mind.

Quite a few of the players aren’t good enough in my opinion.

Most are either lower league, or were deemed surplus to requirements at Championship clubs – hence why they signed for us.

Joyce wants to train and play a different way to Caldwell and I think he suspects some of them aren’t up to it.

Of the remaining 4 games this year we should be looking at 6 maybe 7 points from them. Just can’t see us getting anything this Wednesday but Ipswich at home and Rotherham away should be wins and going off the way we played in 2nd half against Derby then a point is a possibility!

Must admit I’ve looked at the next few games after the Geordies and I fancy us to get a few points from Ipswich, Rotherham, Derby, Huddersfield.

Could easily do Newcastle and get the season going again but head not heart on that one.

That puts us in a right situation then because Mr Joyce will have to be very canny in the January window to improve things drastically. If not it will definitely be all out for the 1 pt a game until May.
Whose fault is this situation then? The Wigan public for not buying enough season tickets to finance the team? Players wages demand too big for us to sustain on our tight budget? Parachute money being used for financial stabilisation rather than buying in and paying wages? Gary Caldwell’s poor dealing? The scouting and recruitment committee? Too much emphasis on balancing the books? The owner not being prepared to put in any more cash for better players? The coaching and bringing on of our own players?
There is a hell of a lot to it so on the field what is Mr Joyce going to do? Gamble on Wildschutt and Grigg getting us out and not being as cautious or put ten men in our own half and withstand a barrage every week?
One thing is I wouldn’t like his job. I know what football I prefer to see but if he can get us out of this hole we all may have to put up with the dull.
