I thought it was interesting that we switched to 3-5-2 in the second half on Sunday. The last time I seem to recall us doing that was away at Chelsea last season. We were playing okay prior to Caldwell getting sent off.

It is obvious there is no way he will play 4-4-2 but is our leader now starting to think that he needs to play someone up front with Boselli to give him a chance?

The other factor is that he now has three centre backs who are “his players” in Alcaraz, Caldwell and now Lopez so maybe this has been his plan all along?

      No, it isn’t.

Better teams than Newcastle would rip us to shreads playing that formation. All they’d need to do is play a ball over the top, or through for a pacy player, and we’d end up with four attackers running against 2 or 3 defenders, as we saw late on on Sunday.

Personally, I’ve always liked 352. If it’s good enough for Glenn Hoddle its good enough for me. But for me, the key to it is the wing-back position. If you have two blokes who can get up and down and are also disciplined and energetic enough to defend well enough when required, it’s OK.

It still gives you the 5 going forward in midfield with the added advantage of an extra forward.

All very simplistic, of course, but I think it’s worth a shot. I saw enough from Boselli and Rodallega against Newcastle to be encouraged that it’s worth a try.

With regard to Swindon’s comment about Roberto 442 – I’m not sure that it’s a case that he will never play it, I just don’t think he believed we have a strong enough midfield to not get over-run. That’s why he likes having 5 in there, I think.

I’m not as worried as Dave that we will be more susceptible to a ball over the top with 3 at the back – provided we have those wing backs in place. Roberto clearly thinks Stam could play one of the them. Maybe Charlie on the other side but he’d better try it out quick before we sell him :)

      Interesting debate.

I’m just not sure we have enough pace in defence to allow us to play the system well. I’m not convinced that Gary Caldwell is good enough for the formation.

As for wing-backs, Stam would be an option, but is he quick enough at getting back into a defensive position? He’s been caught out a few times.

I’m sure Figueroa could play the role on the left.

It’s a system that’s played in South America these days, so may suit the South Americans in the squad, however, I’d disagree about Figueroa playing Vat. He gets caught out of position enough when he plays in a back four let alone actively encouraging him to get forwards!

With regard to pace and the back three I’d be inclined to see how much toe Piscu has before worrying about long balls over the top. He’s young so he may have a bit of pace.

We got caught out by Newcastle on Sunday because we were chasing the game.

Regardless of what formation we play we will always be struggling without a genuine playmaker who can run the midfield. If we get him I think he could be the missing key to unlock the door……..

Caldwell aint good enough for any formation. I gave a big sigh when we signed him because it was a rash signing in my eyes, I think every fan can just about work out a bad signing before they have kicked a ball, a la, Kilbane, Hall Scotland e.t.c. The formation is fine, The lack of decent signings and playing players out of position is the problem.

If Caldwell had a bit of pace he’d be alright, but he hasn’t so we’ll just have to make do until Piscu gets up to speed. Having said that, he is British and does play with a bit of passion which I like.

I think we have the players to make a 3-5-2 formation work, we just need that creative spark. What we need is a little Deco or someone similar to play in, wait for it……………THE HOLE!

But whether we can get a little midfield genius in during this transfer window remains to be seen. Although we are watching 3,432,765 players across the globe so surely one of them will fit the bill? :?
