Or would any other latics fans like to hear people talk about our support without mentioning, man utd and liverpool are up the road, rugby town, people in wigan dont have much money, only been profesional since 1978, other small towns like bolton, rochdale, burnley etc, feel free to add other excuses im sure theres many more.

Maybe it was valid when we first came up but people are starting to get fed up of it now and its not doing us any favours, if we fill the jjb ill be the first one on here saying how good the support was butlets stop being so small time and get rid of this victim mentality, the way its going people will still be going on about it in 10 years, i dont think i can take that to be honest.

Anyone else feel this way, i think im gonna punch in the face the next person who mentions that, brian reade in the mirror made a good point, why cant we just admit it?

“Wigan is a rugby town”…..lets firstly put that complete and utter bowlocks to bed, they won everything for 10 years (and could do again) and didn’t/wouldn’t average 15,000 home fans.

As for our support (and theirs), I think the poor attendances at both clubs is down to sheer laziness on many people’s parts (sit at home or in pub watching it on TV.

However, I think the main problem is that a generation of fans has been spoiled with success (that lot winning everything for years) and us climbing the leagues. Now I think a lot of people have unrealstic expectations, they expect to win everything every year and some of our fans think if we’re not going to challenge for Europe every year then we’ve failed.

As I’ve said before, I wonder if some people in Wigan deserve the opportunity to watch Premier League football at lower division prices

I couldn’t sort things out in time to get to yesterdays game (work commitments) but managed to get to the Fox and Goose just after k o, was chokka, cak computer stop start picture so went to Last Orders for the second half, better picture but guess what, also chokka wi “Wigan fans” ????? Why dont people attend the games, lets be right about it we’re not well off most of us Wiganers and if me and my missus had gone yesterday it would have been £88 to get us there and into the game, I don’t think we spent that and we were out from 3 till about 22.30, football is not a cheap hobby, it’s time players wages and ticket prices were seriously reduced, at the end of the day it’s an hour and a halfs entertainment !

Yep, and thanks for giving us a perfect example.

Is it fair to compare a regionalised, minority sport like rugby league and a global, front to back page monster like football though?

I am never sure what marginalised means, but I remember being told that criticising competition was a sign of weakness. All we can do is control what we can control – we can spread the word, the club can market better, and we can make everyone feel welcome.
I can’t see how we can have it both ways – despising fans of other teams and even other sports to our hearts content – and then complaining about lack of interest. If we want to hate everyone else and be proud of our (too small) core support who follow the team against the odds that’s fine and reasonable. If we want to grow and consolidate then we need to make everyone welcome imo.

Wigan, Bolton, Blackburn, Fulham etc. have to go above and beyond to fill seats.

Unfortunately we have by far the worst marketing efforts in the Premiership, we are even humiliated by a Super League team’s backroom staff, who leave no stone unturned to get fans in.

The only people going to Latics games now are the hardcore and whatever family or friends they take to games. The club makes no effort to bring neutrals in aside from the odd school or sports club.

Football and rugby support doesn’t crossover, but whereas Mick Hogan and his team have embraced competition and broadened their horizons, our staff appear ashamed of the club, you never here anything from them unless it’s a belated defence of another awful attendance. Theirs no ambition, no excitement, no drive.

Last season Blackburn were on the brink of relegation yet the club managed to pack out Ewood Park for the crucual relegation battles with great ticket incentives. Latics on the other hand seem to be going from bad to worse, I’ll be suprised if there’s many more than 13k on against Stoke, which for any Premiership club is a disgrace.
