I’m not so sure!! we broke very fast which is always entertaining we got rid of the ball when needed rogne is very good in the air.. I thought we played decent just a bit un-synched which will come with time. For me a good performance
23 September 2013 at 6:16 pm #121363It wasn’t ugly – it was aimless. Which wasn’t a surprise since we had to play without our two strikers and our best midfield player.
It was a good performance from the lads available. But it was hardly a good Championship performance. On another day, Ipswich would have taken something out of the game.
We won’t always be so lucky. There is a reason why teams choose to play with a recognised forward. And why successful strikers cost so much.
Worryingly, we lacked possession too. Possession in recent games;
Zulte Waregem 61% Wigan 39%
Wigan 44% Leicester 56%Manchester City can field two first teams. Wigan can’t field one.
Manchester City ?% Wigan ?%

What a journey!24 September 2013 at 2:26 pm #121388And I thought that we’d just come round to the view that booting the ball upfield wasn’t enough!

Not really, especially when the majority of that possession is accumulated within 20 metres of your own penalty area.

What a journey!24 September 2013 at 11:06 pm #121423I seem to remember our 2nd goal on sunday coming from a big hoof up to the edge of their area that had the keeper making a bad decision and the rest as they say is history !

We need to keep possession, but at the same time getting it moving forward at pace, instead of giving the opposition time to read the radio times and finish of an Havana.

Manchester City 63% Wigan 37%I did think that, with twelve midfielders in our squad – and four or five in the team – we would be stronger in midfield.
25 September 2013 at 9:38 am #121452Greenock Morton, second from bottom of the Scottish Championship, show how to take on the Champions away and win!
Possession Celtic 67% Greenock Morton 33%
Corners Celtic 27 Greenock Morton 2
Score Celtic 0 Greenock Morton 1 (Imrie, penalty in extra time)Celtic fans will be even more unhappy than Wigan fans this morning.

What sort of fuzzy logic is that?If you don’t have the ball you are just as likely to score than if you do have it – How does that work?
Even if you only have the ball in your own half you’re more likely to score than if the opposition have it.
25 September 2013 at 5:41 pm #121462I think that possession is important, but it is just one of the factors that decide matches.
Logically, the opposition cannot score while you have possession. However, the nature of football is that you give possession away. And if you give it away in front of your own goal, it is likely to lead to an opportunity for the opposition to score.
But if you have 67% possession and win 27 corners – as Celtic did last night – then you can consider yourselves very unlucky to lose. The Greenock Morton manager, however, thought that his side deserved to win. They won’t win many matches with statistics like that!

And if you give it away in front of your own goal, it is likely to lead to an opportunity for the opposition to score.Yes, I’m loking at it in simplistic terms: you have possession and therefore can score at any point during that possession, but if you give the ball away, you no longer have possession, and cannot score. As simple as that!
Obviously having the most possession does not necessarily mean you will win or even score, but you’ve a better chance of doing so if you have the ball than if you don’t have it.
