Now that we do not have any Europa league games I can’t see how we can maintain the size of our squad. I for one expect a cull. Let’s hope Uwe wants to keep the football players and get rid of the hoofers.
Who do you recommend him to sell?
my first choice would have been the pie man – but there was a hint on sunday that he could work in Uwe’s team – just need to keep him locked up over christmas so he stays of the stuffing!
18 December 2013 at 1:49 pm #124954Why can we not maintain the squad? I doubt the income is much different as I’m pretty sure the club wouldn’t have accounted for us making it out of the group stages in their budgets.
It’s still a long season so I can’t see anyone other than the likes of Fyvie or Dicko leaving in January.
18 December 2013 at 2:15 pm #124956Why? Because I am sure Mr Whelan will not want to spend any more money than he needs to and he can cash in on some of the players.
realistically, can we justify Al Habsi and Carson? Lee Nicholls is more than a capable no 2.
For the record, I would rather we keep Al Habsi but I cant see that we will continue with both keepers.
18 December 2013 at 2:51 pm #124960You need somebody to want to buy them before you can get rid. I can only see players who want to leave, leaving.
18 December 2013 at 2:57 pm #124962Interesting possibilities for the future about transfers.

Yes, but Whelan also wants us to get promotion and you can’t do that with a threadbare squad.
As Griff’s said, you need a buyer – so other than the real fringe players, I can’t see anyone leaving.
18 December 2013 at 3:29 pm #124965Yes he wants promotion but he also wants not to have to fund it from his own pocket in the future so he needs to cut costs – I dont thik it will become threadbare but i expect it to be smaller as we don’t have europe.
history says he does not spend money (even if we can afford it) when he doesn’t need to.
returning to the desire for promotion – then why did he appoint Coyle? likley as not he was cheaper than McLaren and he wasn’t prepared to pay compo to Brighton for Poyet.

Are you seriously saying he said to himself “I know, I don’t really want promotion so I’ll appoint Coyle – cos there’s no chance we’ll get promoted with him – and then I’ll sack him in October and get someone in who might give us half a chance. Oh, wait a minute – I don’t actually want to get promoted though, do I?”
18 December 2013 at 4:05 pm #124968regarding players contracts
if the players union gets its way and contracts then mean nothing whatsoever
simple answer is for clubs then to offer players a opt in opt out system were players can sign a form to say they will abide by the clubs long term or short term contracts and stick to them
those that want the new system then feck them off and say bye bye find another club
sorted18 December 2013 at 4:07 pm #124969I’m pretty sure he thought Coyle could do the job and at a lower cost than the others but he made a serious error of judgement.
Much as I have a lot of time for Whelan – I blame him for where we are today – he appointed Coyle.
I for one was very sceptical but remained silent hoping that he would succeed and indeed some of his signings looked to be promising – but the benefit of doubt was withdrawn when I watch (on TV i might add) the charity shield match and was thoroughly depressed after watching his tactics.
I am a Bobby’s boy through and through and I was further depressed as i watched him dsimantle everything that had been built up over the last 4 years.
I am genuinely excited by the new Manager and hopefully I will be a Uwe devotee by the end of the year. I just hope it’s not too late to repair the damage.

18 December 2013 at 4:30 pm #124971bobs doing ever so well at everton cant put my finger on why he didn’t here at wiganI can put my finger on it: much more income. an average attendance of 37,000 each season at Everton and ticket prices considerably higher than at Wigan.
So where are you watching games from this season Bicky? ;)
