Cracking club, Ipswich, and a cracking opportunity for him.
Their heyday was the early 80’s, with the great team they had, including the likes of John Wark, Eric Gates, Paul Mariner, Kevin Beattie, and the Dutchmen, Arnold Muhren and Franz Thyssen. They won the Uefa cup.
Also, they are a remote club, so the locals get behind them. A big club? Yes, I think so. Hell of a lot of potential there, with a big clubs foundations already laid. Be interesting to see what he makes of Jason Scotland as well, I suppose.
Lovely place to live down there as well, for Paul and his family. Wish him all the best.
Why do you pretend to know about all these clubs, people, heritage etc etc. Im betting you are just king of Google and Wikipedia.
To be fair, there is not much in that specific post of Dave’s that any reasonably clued up football fan wouldn’t know.
Can’t be as fair on his assessment of it being a nice play to live, though. ;)

Believe me, I don’t need to google anything on football. Years of collecting programmes and memorabilia, as well as reading loads of books, tends to give you that knowledge.
Actually have an old VHS tape somewhere, of Ipswich’s European games. Unfortunately, I no longer have a VHS player to play it on. One thing I recall though, is that when they scored, there always seemed to be someone in the crowd with one of those old car-horn things.*** (older heads, Griff, do you know what I mean?)
As for Ipswich and Suffolk as a place, it’s quite nice. Some lovely rural areas. Sister in law used to live down there, so been down a few times. Bury St Edmunds.
That Lavenham place is a strange place. It’s all old timber buildings, as if you’ve gone back about 400 years. Very picturesque.
***did i google that about the sound, then? LOL
Jay, strangely enough it was PJ’s decision not to take the team until after Wed ! To me that doesn’t send out a good vibe to the players !!
i think it does send out a good message to the squad. From what i can gather he has basically acknowledged that it was Roy Keane & his squad/preferred starting team that got the club to this stage & it wouldn’t be right of him to come in 2 days before the semi-final, pick his own preferred players from what he’s seen in training & get em to use his style of playing – possibly in the process not picking players who’ve been involved all the way through & causing resentment within his squad straight away
Or perhaps he doesn’t want to be held responsible for the imminent drubbing at The Emirates !! ;)
There are lots of so called big clubs in the Championship. Go through every team and the majority will have some history and some claim to have been bigger once over ! Look at Nob End !! ” Sleeping Giants ” My backside ! The last silverware they won ( League title not inc ) was 1937 !! They live off the fact that they were one of the first teams formed and that bloke who used to play for England Tom whatshisname ! Just go through the Championship and you will see a shed load of ” Big teams ” all bigger than us as well !!
I’m so old I remember them winning the League title with Alf Ramsey as manager and Ray Crawford at centre-forward :(
Didn’t they get promoted in something like 1960/61 and won the old First Division title in their first season up? I’m assuming that’s what you’re talking about, GL.
I’m not sure if that ever happened before that, or since. Well no, it’s certainly not happened since.
(and no, I didn’t google that. I used to collect programmes and the old Charles Buchan books and magazines-sold them on ebay when I got wed. )
They’re the last team to win the Div2 and Div1 title in back to back years. I know Forest got promoted in the 70’s by finishing 3rd, then won the Div1 title the year after (think it was 1978).
Ipswich is a great place to watch football right near town centre buttermarket etc. Lovely stadium some good pubs around and the car park is also used as a truckstop for those of us who actually think its a good career to drive for a living sad i know.
You’ve sold me on’t Town, so that’s one ground that I’ll definitely visit if we go down.
Howdy marrer its a place to go if you have never been one of those “must go to an away game” like Fratton Park Upton Park etc. When i was a kid watching Latics in non league football i dreamt of going to 3 stadiums someday they were White Hart Lane, The Baseball Ground and Portman Road and thanks to our brilliant club i managed all 3 and so many more that we could only fantasise about in those days.
