28 September 2009 at 1:38 pm #9894I wish him well.
He is a big part of the history of this club, we went through a roller coaster ride of soccer ball emotions whilst this chirpy scouser was at the helm.
From his early days when he inherited half of a a ripped apart (courtesy of SB circa first time around) demotivated squad, and the heavy defeats by the likes of Wrexham, and the ultimate lowest points of his reign when we were well and truly out played by Canvey Island at home in the FA cup.
To the rebuilding and the massively happy times like the 3rd div (league 1 championship on near max points), and the bringing in of The Duke and JR not forgetting the likes of Jimmy Bullard. Then on he took us to the “promised land” and even a major cup final.
Yep I know it went stale at the end, he had found his level and couldn’t take us any further and maybe he turned on the fans a bit but we all have our limitations. I think he started to crack under the pressure, his health wasn’t what it was, probably not helped by the fact he may have had an inckling that the gutter press were about to print photos of him doing a bit of extra marital fettleing over a Merc.
All in all I prefer to remember the good bits of Jewels time here.
Unless I missed summert I can’t recall him having a do at us since he left?
Onward and upward Jeweller. ;)

Completly agree with you
28 September 2009 at 2:31 pm #9896I also agree with you. Best of luck to him.
My abiding memory of him, is when he actually rang me up (Honestly, he did) after I’d sent him a scathing letter, after we’d got beat by both West Ham and Sunderland, in the promotion season, and I questioned the players ‘bottle’.
He rang me to defend his players, and whilst he was angry about it initially, he cooled enough to spend about 10 or 15 minutes chatting all things Latics related. Surprised? You bet I was. He let me know though, in no uncertain terms, that he was the gaffer, and what he said, went.
I was sorry it went stale, towards the end.
Similar club, Darlington. Surrounded by bigger names, and a new stadium to boot. Good luck!

Me too, Good luck PJ
28 September 2009 at 4:14 pm #9907Yep mee too, He is a legend here and is one of the big names in our history books, He could make Darlington a good championship club with the facilities he has there. Unfortunatley he has to do it himself as they dont have the resources we did. With his contacts he could make a huge impression there but time is a quality thing in football as we know from his first building season. I wouldnt be surprised if Mr. Ellington and Mr. Teale make loan moves there. Good luck Paul
28 September 2009 at 6:59 pm #9911Aye, that goes for me too. Good luck PJ. His record speaks for itself here.
28 September 2009 at 9:23 pm #9919Good luck to him. He has struggled since he left us, hopefully this will be the break he deserves.
If our paths cross again I for one would give him a good reception for what he helped WAFC achieve while he was here.

When Jewell started making comments about fan support in yr 2 in Prem, I sent him a letter pointing out that the club had hiked up match day prices by 40% and the crowds had dropped by similar amounts. He never replied, but the comments in my letter were reproduced almost word for word in an article by a journalist in a quality Sunday paper that Jewell seemed to be on good terms with.
So I think he was on our side really.
I liked him. He made the best of his ability, he achieved great things with us without spending too much cash. He took us to 10th in Prem and our only major final so far. He was honest enough to leave us at a good time before things went sour – how many managers can say that?
29 September 2009 at 3:07 pm #9979jewell was never on our side
his horrible little agent woukld hawk him to every club at every opportunity.
“ooo ooo oooo i’m sweating.”
he’s at hois level
29 September 2009 at 3:52 pm #9985He only rang me because he was ‘seething’ from what I’d said.
I’d written it straight after either the Sunderland or West Ham defeat, whichever was the second out of the two. He missed me first, and left a message on my answer machine. I must admit, I s*it myself when I got it, and he said he’d try me again tomorrow. He did, and whilst he was angry initially, we did get to have a chat and I made one or two points that he said he agreed with.
One was that Baines looked knackered. He said he agreed, and was thinking of resting him for the next game. (He did. Cardiff away, I think? Or perhaps Leicester?)
Likewise, I also said that Ellington looked well ‘off the boil’, and he said he was resting him. (He did, at Leicester, and Ormerod scored twice!)I also reccomended a player to him, who I’d seen playing for Sparta Prague. The player was Jiri Jarosik, who eventually went to Chelsea (via CSKA Moscow) and also Birmingham, and Celtic. He said to me that he “Didn’t think we were in a position to go after such players as a Championship club”. I didn’t agree with that, as most players at clubs in Eastern Europe are after a move West. (I’m glad that I was proved right, that the player was good enough for the Premiership, mind.)
I got loads of grief on boards for saying this (reccomending players) at the time. But at the end of the day, if you’re a Wigan fan and you see someone playing who you think is a good player, who are you going to reccomend them to? Bolton? Just trying to give the club the ‘heads up’, that’s all.
You see, with my suggestions, I was actually the tactical mastermind behind our promotion………. (Hey, I’m kidding!)
Fair play to Paul Jewell for caring enough to actually RING me. He went way up in my estimation, there.
