I don’t know why I am even writing this and I know I am going to get some stick for this….but I feel like it and I have some time on my hands.
Everyone knows that I am Pro Martinez…just thought I would reiterate my support for our Manager. Last night I thought we were alright with the second half being much better. To be fair, Martinez did say he would try out a few things….and he was true to his word! I have slept on this and was thinking on the way to work what we are missing or need to change.
In the first half, we were a bit narrow but what was worse was the lack of a forward pass. Now, I think passing it sideways and behind isn’t a bad thing but there has to be a probing or attacking pass forward. To do this, two things need to happen:
(1) The person further up the pitch needs to make space or get into a position where they can attack the ball
(2) The person with the ball has to see a clear sight where to pass the ball to the player in frontThis didn’t happen in the first half and a lot of people were getting annoyed with this…fair enough!!
Second half we mostly played a 4-4-2, now I actually think that we have removed out 4-4-2 capability because we don’t have a right winger as such. We did play better because the formation allowed our front two to cause problems removing the cluster of players from midfield and allowed for more space. We started to play a little more directly, looking for runners and playing the ball forward, for me, Gomez was the pinnacle of this and you can see why he was purchased in the first place, he is only 22 or something but needs that experience to improve his game.
Now, with this in mind, I think we are missing some types of players, I would say we needed a good right winger (to play on the left if playing Bob’s 4-5-1/4-3-3) or to go to the right when adapting to play 4-4-2. I also think we need a good proven British midfielder to act as the catalyst for attack, in much way a Bastian Schweinsteiger or a Scott Parker would play (I know Bastian is German and obviously I am not suggesting we should get or would get Schweinsteiger or Scott Parker!!)…so we will make do with Gomez.
I actually think that a 4-1-3-2 would work with the players we have but with one caveat, the players in midfield must be confident to get forward to support but be confident and quick enough to get back to defend. I would love to see this given a try:
Al Habsi
……….Gouhri…………G Caldwell
Stam………………………………….Alcaraz
………………..Diame……………………….N’Zogbia …….Gomez……….Di Santo
……….Roddellega……..Boselli
Some of you will laugh at this, especially the Gomez part, but after watching him against Hartlepool and Preston, he certainly has the skill but I think he needs the confidence (and to get on the weights a little). The midfield can contain the ball and use width without compromising the attacking line. Too many times this season a ball has been crossed into 1 person in the box surrounded by 4 or 5 players. We need to maintain weight up front. This formation will allow that plus the ability to keep hold of the ball and move it around the pitch…
….and before you say, I am happy in the job I am in so I wouldn’t consider replacing Martinez….sorry :o
23 September 2010 at 2:12 pm #47169(1) The person further up the pitch needs to make space or get into a position where they can attack the ballI won’t laugh at you mate* and I think one of our biggest problems is our lack of any/clever movement by players not in possession. Di Santo does it more than most and Cleverley showed in 20 minutes or so against Sunderland that he is used to doing that, but apart from those two there is very rarely a decent passing opportunity on. Ergo, to keep possession, people pass backwards or sideways.
* apart from perhaps suggesting that 4-1-3-1 give us a distinct disadvantage when playing teams with the traditional 11 players in their side ;)
23 September 2010 at 2:18 pm #47170Bloody hell if you think our defence is left exposed by our midfield line up at present, it would be like the British army at Rourke’s Drift with that line up
In effect you’d be playing with 1 midfielder, 1 winger & 4 forwards. Now I’m all for a bit more umph goign forward but that’s taking things a bit too far!!
As for Gomez, yes he may well have looked half decent against a 3rd division side & one staring relegation into that division in the face but he’s very rarely shown it in the outings he’s had against top flight opposition. I’m not saying he deserves the stick he gets but he aint good enough nonetheless

It may be how the message is formatted. To explain, I would have Diame in front of the back four, with n’Zogbia, Gomez and Di Santo just in front of Diame…all have the job of maintaining midfield but getting back to defend, then the two up front…..I suppose you could change n’Zogbia back onto the left and put Di Sant on the right to give defensive balance…..
23 September 2010 at 3:24 pm #47182I knew what you meant but I don’t think it’d work in a million years
Diame just doesn’t track back & I don’t think its in his game to be the anchor man
Gomez certainly isn’t your man to track back & if he has a best position its the “in the hole”/forwardy type one.
Di Santo is a centre forward & we’ve seen with Rodallega how exposed your back line gets by having an out & out centre forward on the wing
N’Zogbia can do & is asked to do it in his current role but it aint his forteSo as with Bobby & his 4-5-1 I’m not saying that the formation couldn’t work, just that we don’t have the personnel to play it
Bobby will continue to play 4-5-1 & from what I’ve seen of the squad his best personnel for doing that would be (when all fit):
Al HabsiStam
Boyce/G Caldwell
Alcarz
FigueroaN’Zogbia (RW)
McArthur
Diame
Cleverley (LW)Di Santo/Moses (in de hole!!)
Boselli
24 September 2010 at 12:19 pm #47288I think it was very clear on Tuesday that with 5 in midfield there is far too many bodies and allows players to hide, McCarthy is a good example of this. We need someone to sit in the centre of the park as its obvious that we had no presence in there against Preston.
24 September 2010 at 12:58 pm #47289At the end of the day people talking tactics on a message forum is purely hypothetical and of no consequence whatsoever because RM is in charge of that so why bother ! Maybe I got out of bed on the wrong side, I’m usually on the right but the boss moved me to the left ! You have got me at it now !! Anyhow think hackneyed when considering forwarding your formation ideas please ! :x
24 September 2010 at 1:28 pm #47290Christ Almighty that `Championship Manager` has a lot to answer for……
What we need is a big hairy centre forward in the Bobby Campbell mould, then lump it into the box for im!

Would love to see this given a try.. Put Alcaraz in the centre though, Gohouri RB and Stam at LB (Mainly as I think Alcaraz would be better in Centre. Would also swap Di Santo and Rodellaga around, play the 2 argentinians up top and it would also be one big lad and a small lad, And would rather Di Santo be up front. These are just what would be my preferences not critisising yours at all :)
Yeah think it would be a good idea if he tried it… But what are the chances??
25 September 2010 at 3:59 am #47321Like I said just leave it to the man in charge ! Ignore the fancy Scotch guy and his slightly threatening post and just go on the game and see what happens !! FFS that is all we can do is it not ? We are not influencing the manager in any way so just in case you are still here Leith man or whatever your name is take heed and stop posting your inane drivel because I think you maybe need to go over to the other site ! You know where I mean dont you ? The site that doesn’t like newcomers or change ! The site that is full of dick heads that went away to Goole but didnt really ! You know the score FC Utd is the way forward ! PATHETIC in other words. I remember when this was all fields and we used to do this …..Get a life FFS Springfield is a housing estate get over it !
25 September 2010 at 1:04 pm #47340I thought the whole point of this site was for people to come on and express opinions? Of course people know it wont change a thing, but it causes no harm to talk opinions.
Not sure what you mean about the other site to be honest.
Talking about posting inane drive, my previous point was you should look at your own post, and the fact is was drivel.
25 September 2010 at 3:38 pm #47348what’s all this shouting !! we,ll have no trouble here ;)
