If you are Scottish and all your family are up there; if you have supported them since being a child and it’s always been your dream to play for them; or if you are at the end of your career and want one last big pay day, then yes fair enough.
But a young Welsh footballer, who is being linked to several Premier League clubs and even Roma….then why would you join Celtic?
I’m not denying that Celtic are a huge club, with supporters all over the world, and in the seventies and eighties, it would be considered a real achievement to sign for them.
Yes, they qualify for Europe every year, but it’s not guaranteed that they’ll get past the qualifiers these days, and in subsequent years will need to play even more qualifying matches just to get to group stages.
Yes they might get drawn again a Barcelona or a Milan, and the average attendance at Celtic Park is massive, but after getting thumped in the San Siro, then playing in a one-sided contest at home against Aberdeen, the following week you’ll be playing in front of ten thousand in Inverness or Dundee.Surely they can’t be offering a salary that eclipses anything you’d be offered in the Premier League.
The SPL must now be one of football’s great career cul-de-sacs, but maybe if he does well he could one day get his dream move to Wigan or Middlesbrough.
12 July 2010 at 8:34 pm #39833Well said, but the main reason people move to other clubs is money & that’s why he went to Celtic.
12 July 2010 at 9:13 pm #39835Imagine you take the money aspect out of it, why would he want to play for anyone in the premiership? If you like the city and appreciate the history and fan base then why not.
Nice to see a player choosing a club for the club rather than Sjokes of this world for the money !
p.s. I’m a Celtic fan and the last 7 years or so could hardly be ignored. Also the SPL is more competitive than ever !

Perhaps you have hit the nail on the head there Edinburgh. He has signed for a football club, not a football team. Very noble if that is the case, but in this day and age, not a great career move.
I watch the SPL as much as I do the Premier League and have a long existing connection with the game north of the border. As you said, it has become a lot more competitive, however I think much of that is due the OF going backwards, rather than a massive leap forwards by the others.
I have to say that as a Celtic fan, it must have been ever so slightly amusing watching the Dutch team arrive back in full orange regalia with their tail between their legs today of all days!
Never mind…’we are the people’
13 July 2010 at 12:07 pm #39905I couldnt possibly comment on the Orange lot !!
Although William of Orange was a Catholic anyway !

Is it really? How many teams are realistically going to win it? It was a one horse race last year as Celtic were so poor.
13 July 2010 at 7:11 pm #39917The league is starting to look a little closer than previous years outside the old firm, but in games there are very few guaranteed wins, teams were challenging the top two until they ran out of players come April.
Soon as Rangers sort themselves out financially, I hear its over £100m in debt now, then the others will come even closer.
