Wigan Athletic have confirmed that General Manager John Benson will leave the club at the end of the month, following a highly successful ten year association.
In two spells at the club, between 1995 and 2002, and then 2006 until now, John has performed a huge variety of roles. He initially came in November 1995 as Assistant Manager to John Deehan, helping to mastermind the rise from the old Division Three to Division Two.
He was then General Manager when Ray Mathias took over for a season following Deehan’s departure – helping to bring in key signings such as Andy Liddell and Arjan De Zeeew- before taking charge of the first team in 1999-2000. This was a historic season for Latics, the first at the then JJB stadium, with the team setting a club record unbeaten run of 24 games from the start of the season but finishing in heartache at the Division 2 Play Off Final at Wembley.John then returned to a role as General Manager and was involved in the appointment of managers Bruce Rioch, Steve Bruce and crucially, Paul Jewell, who was to take the club to new heights.
John took up a similar role at Birmingham City from 2002, but returned as General Manager under Jewell in 2006, playing a critical role in the arrival of some of the club’s most significant ever signings, including Emile Heskey, Chris Kirkland, Mario Melchiot, Titus Bramble, Lee Cattermole, Wilson Palacios, Maynor Figueroa, Hugo Rodallega and Charles N’Zogbia.

according to the daily mirror“Martinez has also won a major behind-the-scenes power battle with the imminent exit of general manager John Benson. The pair had not seen eye-to-eye on signings.
Benson is set to leave and follow chief executive Brenda Spencer out of the DW Stadium – despite his strong and long-term links with owner Dave Whelan.”[link2:2qpt0i1j]daily mirror,http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/Transfer-news-Wigan-boss-Roberto-Martinez-set-to-raid-former-club-Swansea-for-midfield-star-Leon-Britton-article436017.html%5B/link2:2qpt0i1j%5D
now i know that people are always quoting inside information at the club, but i was told about this last week by someone who really does know what is going on,he has only ever told me 2 other things and both were spot on.
the gist of it is benson does not rate britton and said we should not sign him,but martinez is insisting we should.
he has also clashed with martinez over the links in south/central america, benson who has developed that area for us has been overuled by kevin reeves on some players and now told that martinez/reeves think that he should scout more in spain than the americas.

I have to say, that of the two of them, Benson would appear to have had a more successful time of it in the transfer market over the years. That said, Roberto’s still a bit wet behind the ears.
24 May 2010 at 7:09 pm #34533i had not finished griff i was still trying to manage that link thing.
24 May 2010 at 7:11 pm #34534Martinez seems to want change and I don’t see why not. The replacements better do the job though !

Time will tell Griff – If the behind the scenes bust up has in part been caused by Bobby’s insistance that he signs another Swansea player (Britton) then I fear the worst.
As I do with the “Bobby wants his own men” on the backroom staff quotes, if he choices of Jones & Barrow as coaches are anything to go by
Add to that the rumour that Bobby wants to concentrate on the Spanish market (which has brought us Amaya & Gomez – and almost brought us a £7mill reserve team signing in January) as opposed to the Latin American market (which has brought us Valencia, Palacios, Rodallega, Figueroa & Thomas) & its looking like brown trousers time next season!!!!! ;) Moreno is the exception that proves the rule when it comes to the Latin American signings!!24 May 2010 at 7:35 pm #34541”A new broom perhaps, or has Roberto unwittingly picked up a just-about-long-enough length of rope?”Time will tell Griff – If the behind the scenes bust up has in part been caused by Bobby’s insistance that he signs another Swansea player (Britton) then I fear the worst.

I made my post before LMB finished his and I did wonder if what he says in there about a back-room bust-up is the reason behind this. It would certainly explain it.
I don’t think there is necessarily anything inherently wrong with looking at Spain rather than Latin America but, as you both say, Benson had a great deal of success in that market and Roberto is now putting himself under great pressure to deliver if this is true. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it I say, and why are we confined to looking in one market anyway?
Time will indeed tell whether Whelan has provided a broom or a rope.

Britton is a free transfer and comes on the back of two successful Championship seasons.
You’ve also ommiited Diame and the two youth teams players on the brink of breaking into the first team from your Spanish list. Amaya is the exception that proves the rule when it comes to the Spanish signings!!
Those in the pro and anti Martinez camps must both welcome this development, the onfield success or failure of Latics will now be down entirely to the manager.
24 May 2010 at 9:49 pm #34572martinez is the worst manager at the level pro rata that we have ever had.he is not as good as useless.the class of person that he thinks is right for a premier league team is unbelievable jones barrow gomez scotland amaya now britton.he will take us to the next level the championship here we come.people say he did a good job last season but the only time you came off feeling great was chelsea arsenal and liverpool.he couldn’t get the best of benson so he has got whelan to get rid of him mores the pity he should have got rid of martinez.
