24 May 2010 at 10:16 pm #34574martinez is the worst manager at the level pro rata that we have ever had.he is not as good as useless.the class of person that he thinks is right for a premier league team is unbelievable jones barrow gomez scotland amaya now britton.he will take us to the next level the championship here we come.people say he did a good job last season but the only time you came off feeling great was chelsea arsenal and liverpool.he couldn’t get the best of benson so he has got whelan to get rid of him mores the pity he should have got rid of martinez.
You ignored signings like Diame, McCarthy and Moses because they would destroy your argument.
At the very least put forward a balanced view and give credit when it’s due.

I have no problem with people not supporting Martinez 100% – everyone is entitled to an opinion. But “worst manager at the level pro rata…”
Did he keep us in the Premier League? Yes.
Did we “come off feeling great ” after Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal? Yes – and we just dismiss that, do we? Something never done before by us.
I’m with No1fan on this (even with his neat edit by the time I wrote this ;) ).
24 May 2010 at 10:56 pm #34579it isn’t about success and failure it’s about the class of player that he wants to sign.you must agree that barrow jones scotland gomez amaya are not what a club in the premier league want they along with him are a recipe for disaster and it would appear he doesn’t know what he is doing.i said the only time you came off after a match last season satisfied was against liverpool chelsea and arsenal it got to the point to be embarassing after the heavy defeats against chelsea away tottenham away man u twice portsmouth away.
24 May 2010 at 11:12 pm #34581Like most of us, you haven’t got a clue how good Jones and Barrow are, they can only be judged on their achievements, which is being part of a management team that kept us in the Premiership.
I agree Amaya, Scotland and Gomez have been crap, that doesn’t mean they weren’t worthy signings with potential.
McCarthy, Moses and Diame more than make up for any dissapointment in the above signings.

Er, I think you’ll find the original debate was Spanish versus Latin American players.
Moses is hardly Spanish, McCarthy couldn’t be less Spanish if he tried and the nearest Diame gets to being Spanish is the presence of three of the letters of the word “armada” in his name.
24 May 2010 at 11:31 pm #34585… or 4 letters out of 5 being in “Madrid” ;)

Or the fact that he played in Spain? Would say it is a bit closer than having letters in his name argument that you put forward ;)

It’s reasonable to suggest a region is scouted rather than players of a particular nationallity.Gomez was signed on the basis of his Swansea performances, a little like Bruce having seen Palacios at Birmingham.
Diame was a product of the Spanish scouting, if he and the two Spanish youth team players progress to the first team, that would be 3 success’s from 4 signings from Spain, Amaya being the player who’s not lived upto expectations.

God help us next season25 May 2010 at 1:52 am #34635and its goodbye from him
A lot of Wigan Athletic supporters will be glad to see the back of John Benson, he divided opinions with the rank & file however he has been a big part of Latics modern history over the years.
John Benson says of his departure …..
“No one is bigger than any football club,” he says, “that is a lesson I have learned from my time in the game.
I respect totally the fact that Roberto Martinez wants to bring in his own people around him, that’s football.
I have enjoyed working under him this season, but it is clear that the time has come for me to move on.
I have no criticism of anyone at the club and I wish to place on record my thanks to everyone at Wigan Athletic, from the Chairman down, to Brenda Spencer, Roberto Martinez and all the staff.
Wigan Athletic are a fantastic club who have defied all the odds to become an established Premier League name in the last five seasons and I wish them all the best in the future. I will look back upon my time here with nothing but pride and happiness.”Best mate & boss Dave Whelan said …..
“It’s a sad day when you have to say goodbye to a man of the calibre of John Benson, who has done so much for our club and I want to thank him for his many years great service. It is a measure of the man that it is he who has decided to step down.
Football is about change, however, I accept and respect that the manager needs to work with his own people and now we look forward to a new era in the history of the club.”25 May 2010 at 1:57 am #34638Anonymous

Then if you’re having Diame, by the same argument it is reasonable to suggest you can’t include McCarthy or Moses.
