26 May 2010 at 9:44 pm #34853”Personally I think it’s a breath of fresh air to see a manager trying to play the game the right way”
This “trying to play the game the right way” is really starting to get on my wazz
For me tryign to play the right way is by winning, scoring goals, not conceding many & playign with guts & passion
For the vast majority of the season what I witnessed was turgid & dull. Performances devoid of passion, creativity, fight & pace and replaced with slow, plodding, gutless, sideways football that created little in the way of goal scoring opportunities & when it did there was no-one there to get on the end of it coz he didn’t have the personnel to make his 4-5-1 formation work
I’d love to know if “trying to play the right way” includes getting your worst points tally since entering the top flight, turning one of the best defences in the league into the worst within months, having our worst ever goals conceded & goals difference record since entering the top flight???No matter how many people say & how often they repeat it, nothing will convince me that what i witnessed for the vast majority of last season was “trying to play football the right way”
We all watched the same games, I simply believe in giving a manager time to build his own team before judging him.
The last time we ditched a manager prematurely it was Mathias, that put us back years. The Benson season was wasted while Jewell spent his first year in charge overhauling the squad.

I know I’m in a minority on this but I thought Whelan did the right thing in getting rid of Mathias & actually think his appointment was a mistake in the first place
I thought the football was wretched (sacrificing the midfield, defending in numbers & hitting it long for our 3 forwards). I also thought Mathias lacked the belief in his team’s abilities to beat the bigger club’s in the division like City that year – much like when Eriksson was in charge of EnglandAs for Benson’s year being wasted – yes it imploded a bit towards the end of the season but we got to a play off final & were within minutes of promotion to the Championship. Certainly no more a wasted season than Mathias’s
