And at the moment Burnley are top of the Championship. I had to take a closer look at their line up and couldn’t help but notice they are playing two out and out strikers in a 4 4 2 set up. I had to look twice at this because surely playing two strikers in the Championship can’t work. Yes two, out and out strikers in a 4 4 2. It just doesn’t work as many have said on here. It isn’t the way. It’s old fashioned. These Dingles should be in a relegation spot. Bloody idiots investing all that money in Andre Grey to play alongside Vokes. Suicidal move, surely to bankrupt and relegate them.

Ah – of course line-ups as shown in the media accurately reflect the way teams play for the full 90 minutes in a game. Managers are well known for letting everyone know their formation.

With respect Garswood Tic I have relations who follow the Dingles and they say that’s the way Dyche plays and Gray and Vokes are defo an old fashioned front two. They love it. Bloody Dingles have turned round some strikers in the last few years and then replaced them.

Listen, some sides do play a 4-4-2 and Burnley predominantly stuck to that formation the last time that they went up as did Leicester that same season and Leicester still on the whole stick to a rigid 4-4-2 formation, mind you it doesn’t seem to working for them in the top flight though does it!
I am not saying that 4-4-2 is the be all and end all of everything and sides should and do mix it up a bit but I am saying that it does exist in the Championship and higher! Some on here talk of it as being some sort of defunct football tactic that has been cast into the archives of football! Hull who are top of the table adopt a 4-4-2 formation as well by the way and I am sure that you will find many others high up the same league do also! Now of course during the games and due to circumstances sides will chop and change formations but they have always done that, it’s how you set up your stall beforehand that shows your intentions, the contingency plans will be in the managers head unless you are Roberto Martinez of course!

But on odd occasions Saint Bobby changed and we looked and played better and no Sammy it was just an attempt at irony this time. Not doing bad though Hull and The Dingles.

I can’t see what your obsession with a second out-and-out striker is considering we’re fine with scoring of goals. It’s conceding them that’s the problem!

But anyway, here are a couple of stats for you:

In the Premier League, Leicester are the only team in the top half of the table who play 442. And there are only 3 other Premier League teams who usually play 442.

The current top 3 teams in the Championship play 442, but the 5 teams closely following them do not. The rest of the Championship is evenly split between those playing 442 and those who do not.

I bet if you looked at League One there would be more teams playing 442 than not. And more so in League Two.

It basically demonstrates that in the lower leagues where players (and arguably the managers) have less ability, they tend to stick to a more rigid formation.

But, most of these formations change depending on whether the team’s attacking or defending. Recently we’ve looked like we’ve been playing 541 when not in possession and 2431 when attacking.

And as for Hull and Burnley doing well, so they should with the £65 million Premier League prize money plus parachute payments they both got!

Very good points Standish and I must agree we are doing very well considering the huge changes there has been at the club over the last two or three seasons. One thing I must applaude Burnley for was their smash and grab last season last season and not blowing the money on players and players wages and with a couple of sales bolstered their financial position even further which is fueling their challenge this season. They left the Prem and began the Championship in a much stronger financial state than Latics but again we made some attempts at staying up and did play with the big boys for eight years at an inevitable cost.I just wonder how the Whelan dynasty will play it next season if we are promoted.

Formations don’t win matches IMO, purpose & intensity will though. Whether it’s a 442, 433, 451, 541 or any other new buzz formation i’ve not mentioned, you have to play to win. One up front can work if that player is supported by the other players, if not then he will look sh ! te and hardly score. Sound familiar?
