Last season I got slated on here for having an opinion that we do not play football but pass the ball very badly and get into trouble and therefore in my opinion should sack Martinez.

I then attended the end of season dinner and spoke with Martinez who advised me that the season was ok and things can only get better when he brings in more players to his squad. I gave him the benefit of the doubt as we had beat Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea etc.

Since that chat, we have brought in a new load of poor players (my opinion so far after 1 league game) lost 8-0 against the champions and then lost 4-0 against the side that just got promoted.

In my opinion, the players who played on Saturday could be a decent team but do not play to their full potential and I think this is down to then not playing for the backroom staff and manager. I am not saying you should have played at the top level to be a good coach, manager etc but the current staff seem unsuitable to manage big ego’s and to manage a team in the premier league.

I am asking all the Martinez supporters why I should continue to have any faith in him.

I did not boo at all on Saturday, I sat there and laughed to myself thinking why oh why is it always Wigan, why do we keep getting hammered, then I left on 45 minutes in disgust. I will return the next game, and the one after that, and the one after that but these players under Martinez do not deserve my support at the minute and the book should rest with one person, the manager. Whelan does not motivate the team, he may have a say who comes and goes but it is the job of Martinez to get that team going, and he cannot do it.

It is time for him to go NOW! I await any sensible comments as to why he should get more time!

Yes, yes, yes – that may well all be true but don’t forget we beat Chelsea, Liverpool & Arsenal
Therefore Bobby must stay. All hail King Bobby!!!! ;)

On a serious note – I’ve said since about October of last year that Bobby wasn’t up to the job & have seen nowt since then that would make me change my mind BUT i think to sack him after one game would be ridiculous. Saturday could (although I doubt it) be a completely freaky, one off result & Bobby should be given 10 games of this season to prove he’s learned his lessons & can improve upon last season’s performance
If he can’t do this then it leaves another manager with enough time to turn things around a la Bruce in 07/08 as I honestly believe that with the right tactics, coaching, formation etc.. the first choice XI could be a pretty decent outfit

The big question at the end of last season was had Martinez learnt from his bad experiences, and by all account he had similar disasters at Swansea, the answer is no he hasnt changed it.

I think the Wolves game will be key for Martinez. IF he last that long !

I don’t think Whelan will take much more 16’000 crowds at the DW. He will soon realise that Martinez isn’t wanted at Wigan and bring in a “Bruce style” manager.

As for similar disasters at Swansea, I think finishing in the top 1/3 of the championship and getting a few drummings is a far better situation than the one Bobby’s got us in now.

This is all Johnathan Jackson’s fault

What did you expect him to say? “Actually Nat – or can I call you Dan? – I am waaaaay out of my depth here and just hope I can get towards the end of my contract before some daft get spots it. Any idea what this 4-4-2 is that people think will fix everything? I’d give it a try if only I knew what it was”

I understand what your saying but to speak with him you to would be convinced he knows what He is on about.

To sack him now would be justified in my opinion, he is just not quite there. We need a no nonsense manager and to start again like we did in our first year.

Here’s my take, for what it’s worth.

RM has consistently said that he needs 3 transfer windows. I don’t think he would keep saying that without having had some agreement from DW that he will get at least that. Assuming the summer he started wasn’t his first window, he has the January one to come before he would get binned.

Assuming, the first summer was deemed his first window, then he has had his three already. I think he has until end October/mid November before Whelan would get shut. And I think he will get shut at that point, if things carry on as poor as they are at the moment. And he would probably be right to do so, though personally, I think it would be a sad day.

IMO Bobby has had 3 transfer windows. He was appointed in early June last year which gave him the best partof 3 months of that particular transfer window
As for it being a sad day if he goes – I’d agree but only in so far as that he does seem a decent bloke who loves the club & I desparately wanted him to do well so it would be a shame if he failed. But if he aint good enough he needs to go

            #43106

I can’t see an argument in his favour any more. The system doesn’t work without very, very good players. There’s lots of passing but masses of goals conceded and very few scored ( and the ones we score are hardly ever from free flowing football). It needs some common sense. The squad he has is full of able footballers but they are confused as hell and it leads to chaos. Whelan is far from daft and RM will go very soon. 5 or more from Chelsea would probably be enough.

            This is all very painful.

Agree with you entirely Griff, but the worrying thing is, our next 5 games (and people keep saying ‘give him 5 more games’) are against Chelsea H, Spurs A, Sunderland H, City H, and Birmingham A. Not many points coming from those games, one would think. I’m worried that he get’s those games, we lose most, if not all of them, and end up rooted to the bottom with no points and a load of goals against. I don’t think we’d get out of it with this squad.

I said at the end of last season, “let’s see where we are at by October”. Unfortunately, I don’t think we can afford to wait that long. I also feel we will lose Rodallega sooner than later, whilst we know N’Zogbia is on his way out, too. I find it worrying that we are on about losing a key player for £10 million or something like that, and even being linked with a player such as this Finnish player, Ronni Perocona, or whatever his name is, for £500,000. Surely the low price-tag tells you something? In all seriousness, I wouldn’t let him (Martinez) spend any more money.
I also worry that if we wait too long, and until the team has been considerably weakened by departures, we will find it that much harder to attract a half-decent replacement for Martinez. We’ll find it hard, anyway. But if we have played 6, lost 6, and have a goal difference of minus 20……well, would YOU fancy it? I wouldn’t.

My overall opinion is, I think he is vastly out of his depth, and truth is, he had ONE decent season at a very everage Championship club, where he achieved nothing other than a reputation for ‘pretty football’ and finished EIGHTH, 6 points off a play off spot. In other words, very average.
But for his club links and sentimentality, would Whelan have looked at him twice? No way. It was a mistake.

Last week it was the strongest squad we’ve ever had and that comment was a well reasoned, informed fact because you’d seen them play whilst I was told I didn’t know what i was on about coz I hadn’t seen a friendly game against Zaragoza & all i did was whinge, whinge, whinge, moan, moan, moan

As I’ve said in another thread I said last week that I’d remind you of this the next time the wind changed direction & you changed your mind!!

I am not one for sacking managers but he is showing himself to be incapable, but in fairness last season he showed signs of playing great football which could match the best teams in the country. I really want him to succeed which is why I think I am being so patient with him, but for now I want him to stay.

To be honest, I’ve been waiting for you to reply and throw this at me, and yes, you are RIGHT.
All I can say is that I was going off what I had actually SEEN, rather than what I wanted to believe. That’s not me being funny with you, that’s just saying how things are. The first half showing against Zaragoza was quite promising. We looked neat, tidy, in fact, we looked a totally different team to what we witnessed last Saturday. Whatever happened in the meantime to cause this, I have no idea. You could point the finger at N’Zogbia for disrupting the squad, but even so, I don’t think he was behind all our failings, do you?

I wouldn’t actually say that the ‘wind has changed direction’, as I was a pessimist lasts season, but I tried to also keep some faith, and I think for you to throw that at me is a pretty bad show, to be honest. What I will say, and I suggest you keep this as a collectors item, because an admittence of being WRONG is a real rarity from me, but WRONG I was. 90 minutes last week against a team that would be an average Championship side this season, proved I was wrong. Perhaps I had more faith in my team than was deserved? I don’t know. I never thought in the memory of man that this team we have got now, were capable of such an embarrassing display. But there we have it.
It says it all when even some of the loyalist of Roberto Martinez and Latics fans, have told me this week they have had enough. It’s not just Roberto. It’s the fact that we have a stubborn manager trying to play a set way, and he has some really big ego’s to deal with, who are clearly at odds with the system. Nor do we have any leaders out there on the pitch, no experience, as we lost that with Melchiot, Bramble, and Scharner going. Scandalous really.

The majority of fans have definitely decided he must go, one way or the other. I’ve seen it on here, on YOTAC, and whilst the Mudhuts lot have not posted anything on their site post last Saturday, I have spoken to certain individuals who have said “You can’t defend it anymore” And they are spot on.

So there you go, Tyldesley. Make of that what you will.

And waiting another 5 games will NOT do us any good, believe me.
