I really enjoyed the match last night. I took someone who has been watching Liverpool for over 40 years and he said he couldn’t believe how Wigan dominated Liverpool with ease and simplicity. He also said that the way we played football in the second half was some of the best he has seen in a long time and can’t understand why we are in the position we are.

It did make me think to this point last year and where we are now:

Last year – playing as if there was no plan, looking out of position, not bothering (a bit like the first 15 minutes last night), no chances being created, poor passing and never looking like scoring.

This year – Commitment from players, good passing and movement, keeping in position. The most pleasing thing to see is the amount of chances we create, I haven’t known a Wigan side to create the chances we do, it’s unbelievable!!

The thing we need to do now is to put those chances away and have a midfielder who can get up to the box ready to receive the ball or to play the killer pass. I was also thinking to a time where we had as many attacking options as we do, we always seem to have too many midfielders and defenders in years gone past, now we have loads of strikers and defenders but very light in midfielders..

I think Caldwell is getting back to match fitness, it’s a shame Gohouri got injured when he did because up to Newcastle, our defence was pretty solid (apart from the first 2 games of the season)

…..I guess the midfielder thing is the last puzzle to complete for Bob in the 3 or 4 transfer windows that Bob quoted!!

Yes but will we hang on to our key players come January ? If we dont then we are pretty much back to square one !

We have been desperately unlucky and our own worst enemy this season.

We should have beat Sunderland although they did defend well in numbers, we needed to do better at home against ten men.

We threw away a 2-0 lead at Newcastle. Scored too early and didn’t defend well when called upon.

We should have beat Bolton at home although they were on a good run of form, throwing away a lead at home in the prem against rival opposition isn’t good.

A terrible decision cost us at Blackburn. N’zogbia’s goal was perfectly legal and at 1-0 (wigan) it could have been a totally different game.

We put in a fantastic performance last night and really should have beat Liverpool at home for the 2nd season running. We did almost throw it all away though when Gerrard tried to break the net rather than place his shot. Lucky!

All in all, our performances have been pretty good (excluding Blackpool, Chelsea in 2nd half and Fulham). If we would have won the games we should have we would be in the top half but that’s football for you.

P.S. Hendry Thomas for me is the most improved player i’ve seen in my time watching Wigan. Fantastic season so far, 1st name on team sheet!

Might I add that it was Thomas who got the ball taken off him day dreaming that led to Liverpool very nearly nicking it ! He played ok last night apart from that but I certainly wouldn’t say he is the most improved player ! In fact not too long back a few of us were suggesting that he is stealing a living !!

I thought is was Diame who lost the ball, not Thomas, in much the same way he did at Blackburn when Roberts scored.

You’re spot on, it was Diame both against Liverpool and at Blackburn. He works wonders in midfield momo but I can’t help but think he should be subbed after 60 mins every game as he seems to just go hiding and turn into a completely different player. Strange!

Hendry Thomas’ determination and overall work rate is 100% plus he’s improved his passing, he goes forward now as well as backwards and sideways.
