Its not a result to get too upset over as its clear that Bobby wasn’t especially bothered with the FA Cup & I guess for our reserves to hold a mainly first team Bolton to a 1-0 defeat over 180 minutes of football is not bad
BUT just going off the players who played last night & there performances I came away thinking the following:
    Pollit – still geet n’it
Stam – i thought he started the game very well but dropped an absolute clanger that led to their goal. but I can see somet in him
Lopez – not a left back but defended okay although he offered nowt going forward
G Caldwell – a liability waiting to happen
S Caldwell – slow but steady. didn’t make the cock ups his brother did
McManaman – looks like a player with plenty of promise. Was our most threatening player whilst on the pitch & I’d like to see him get more opportunities in the league
Thomas – It was some point in the 2nd half before I even realised that he was playing. The word anonymous could have been invented for this fella
Diame – You can see he’s got some decent tricks in his locker but I haven’t seen a lazier midfielder in my time of watching Latics. If he ever breaks sweat it’ll be a miracle
McArthur – I’ve been wanting to see him start in place of Watson in that holding midfield role but I thought he was dire last night. First really poor performance I’ve seen from him though & it can’t help his performance having to cover for the other 2 midfield muppets. More time on the bench beckons
Gomez – Not a right winger in the memory of mon & kept drifting into the centre which left Stam exposed & meant we had little threat going forward down that flank. Way too slow in speed of body & thought to be a success at our current level in any position. Bit of a wuss in tackles too but a good effort he hit the bar with
Di Santo – By far & away the worst of a bad bunch of performances from our players last night. Most forwards would struggle to get much change out of playing up front on their todd with Cahill & Wheater marking them but even still any centre forward worth their salt would have made some form of decent contact with that header in the 2nd half & he had an opportunity in the first half where the ball fell to him 15 yards out facing & in the middle of the goal & his first instinct (instead of getting a shot in) was to turn his back to goal & hold the ball up. I’ve seen nowt from him in any of his performances that would indicate to me that he’s gonna be the answer to our centre forward prayers & it looks like his £4.5mill transfer fee can be added to the £6.5mill & £1.5mill wasted on other donkey centre forwards. Oh & when he thinks he’s been fouled but the ball braks to one of our players & we’re still attacking, Bobby ought to tell him that instead of sitting on the floor sulking he’d be of far more use getting up off his feet & into the penalty area. Likewise if he gives the ball away or a pass to him isn’t inch perfect, rather than just standing around looking pished off his job is to actually try to win the ball back or close the opposition down

As for Bobby – as I said it was obvious that he wasn’t overly keen on Latics having an FA Cup run so I should look at his performance in that light but to go 1-0 down with 20 minutes to go & not make a single substitution to try & add to the woeful tally of 1 shot on target was a bit of a poor show imo

I think I agree with that probably word for word.

On the last point, if Bobby wasn’t arsed about winning there was probably no point risking injury by bringing someone on so late.

And anyway, it was probably past young Mustoe’s bedtime. How small is he???!!! We thought he’d won a competition at school to warm up with the subs ;)

Last night was a bitter disappointment, not just because of the result but the fact that Bob actually stated before the match that there were positions in the first team up for grabs. The performance levels he got from some of the players were well below par.

As stated in another post this confirms his first team and points towards the players we need to look at offloading in the summer. Even if we do go down, some of the performances wouldn’t suffice in the championship.

Maybe, just maybe there was some concern that if the club progressed a little further in the competition a succesful cup run may have had an effect on the numbers going to the all important league games due to lack of finances in these new times of austerity, so the result! why not field a weakened side and rest the backbone of the squad.? Just a thought :

I’ve no problem with Bobby putting out a weakened side and/or resting key players for the relegation battle ahead. That wasn’t what I was criticising

I was criticising the performance of many of the players bearing in mind it was a chance for some of em to show that they should be starting regularly

I also agree with Griff that if Bobby wasn’t that bothered then was there any point in making subs & risking injury – it was just disappointing to see us go out so meekly. Bobby could also have brought on the likes of Mustoe without risking any of his important back up players to injury

And thats why I dont entertain cup games ! It would appear from the attendance that I am not alone on that one !! If I want to watch fringe players I can go to a reserve game and pay next to nothing. 8-)

Didn’t see the match last night thank god. Hopefully he has seperated the dead wood now. Heard it on the radio we sounded awful. Its a shame really i dont blame bobby cause he said its a chance for people to claim a stake for first team and it sounded as if none of them were bothered. Caldwells sounded bad on the radio, no change there then

Just one thing on this. Lopez is a right footed player so was playing out of position.

Pretty much spot on Tydesley, I was very disappointed that some of the players who are not in the team did not take their chance and play their socks off to get in the team.
Your analysis on the team as a whole is accurate in my eyes aswell. I would just disagree about Gomez. To be honest I didn’t think he was that bad last night, looked good on the ball on occasions and I really think there is a decent player there.

As fro Martinez, I thought he did exactly the right thing regards giving the fringe players a go. I wanted to see young Redmond get a go as in the reserves he’s been playing well.
On the whole a disappointing game but we must look at the bigger picture, that loss could have been the blessing in disguise.

              #59843

To be fair I didn’t say Gomez was that bad last night.
I said that it showed he is no right winger & he isn’t. When i said he is too slow in body & thought I am saying that its clear he has the ability but not the speed to make that ability effective at this level
Hence why he only looks good on the ball “on occasions” as you put it

As I said if Bobby wants to put out a fringe side that’s his perogative & in a way I guess its good to give the young players a chance without the pressure of relegation (although to be fair the only young player he gave a chance to was McManaman) & its a way of keeping the back up players match fit

i don’t see however how the defeat could be a blessing in disguise unless Bobby uses it to take stock & sees that many of his squad players quite simply aren’t good enough & he gets shut of em in the summer

One less trip to London with possibilities of injuries. Keep the squad together on this trip to Tenerife. As someone else said fans who can keep there money to go to all the more important games in the league coming up.

Read your post again and misunderstood as regards Goemz, agree completely with what you say.

Martinez should’ve given more of the kids a chance instead of doing just one forced substitution.
It was the only reason I went but instead had to watch much of the usual dross on offer. One of the subs was so small that he must be bloody good to compete at that level so it would have been nice just to see what he could do. It was a real shame McManaman came off as he looked good.

Also Stam has joined the ranks of Ged Brannan and Michael O’ Neil as part of an all time worst XI. The man looked like an amateur last night and was also pretty cowardly ducking out of tackles etc.

Gomez is the most left footed person ever and where does RM play him? instead of playing Moses there.
