I can understand people saying that they dont enjoy the Premiership, its not the be all and end all, its not competitive over a season for clubs like ours. I just wonder what those fans reactions would be if we werent near the top of the Championship around this time of the year, if and when we go down, regardless of style of play, manager etc.

Would those same fans who would almost welcome relegation, want us to be winning more games to get us in contention for promotion to the league they dont enjoy?

The Premiership, for me went years ago. Too many prima-donna’s in the game nowadays. Its a business not a sport. The day it totally died was a few weeks back when the Mancs(supposedly the biggest name in world football)bowed down to Granny sha**er Rooney, something they said they’d never do.

In reply to your first comment VAT,

The referee went card crazy after giving us 3 last warnings for stupid fouls.

          Alcaraz deserved to go.

Rodellega deserved to go straight red.

Today Wigan were very average in the first half but looked good value for heading in at 0-0 against a poor United side. The difference was our dodgy right side and Alcaraz out of position twice in the first half.

Yes they got a goal, but the first 8 minutes of the second we looked ok on the ball. Gomez was negative during two attacks which didnt help.

After the first red, we were in trouble but has we carried on with 8 defenders things didnt really change and we tried to make it difficult for them to break us down.

The most frustrating thing, if we had gone for United today, I honestly think we may have rattled them and had a chance of a little more than a point. Maybe a more positive manager would have had a go today.

I must also comment on our support today, the following of around 400 was awful to see, I know its expensive etc but we should be taking more than that!!! well done to everyone who went though.

You forgot to mention that United players got away with similar fouls, including one where one of our lads was flattened from behind in the corner in front of us.

Stop aiming sly digs at Martinez, saying we put 8 men behind the ball. Our whole game plan is based on getting men behind the ball, and getting possession, and keeping it. Something we did very well in the first half, except Gomez, who is 2 yards off the pace. We played very well in the first half, but after what happened in the second half, you can’t assess that.

In the next few weeks, someone will record a ‘shock’ win over United……unless the referee intervenes.

Wouldn’t mind us being a ‘yo-yo’ side, as it would mean we’d have some success along the way. Plus the parachute payments would offset the club debts.

Just got back in from Manchester.

How on earth can anybody assess that today? As far as Latics performance goes, I can only judge it on the first 45 mins. We were fine, played some nice football, had a couple of wayward efforts, and looked highly capable of getting something from the game, against a distinctly very average, United side, who only slightly threatened us. We looked well on for getting something. And then it happened. Right on half-time they nicked a goal. It was a poor one to concede, with Evra heading in on the back post.(Poor marking there, Ronnie Stam)

So we went in at half-time a goal down. Harshly. But still, I felt we could get something from the game. But I forgot to mention that in a mad 10 minute spell in the first half, the referee (not sure who he was?) went card crazy on Latics, flashing several yellow cards, when United players got away with identical fouls. (how typical) And then in the second half, Alcaraz, one of the booked players, did a foul well out of any danger area, out towards the wing, and he was shown a second yellow. I think it was very harsh. (I’ve not seen the replay yet)
At that point it was clear to see we’d come away with nothing. This was confirmed a few minutes later, when Rodallega received a straight red for a sliding tackle. Ok, it DID look like he went in with feet raised, but he seemed to slide for an eternity beforehand, on a pitch that had been heavily watered at half time. (Why?)
So down to nine players. They chucked Rooney on, and that Chicken-tikka fella. Rooney had one header that Ali saved, and United tried their best to set him up for a ‘glory moment’. But it was Chicken-Tikka who stole in to score a second. And that was game over. We left 5 mins from the end, to avoid the Manc throng on the tram, but were stunned to see that about 20,000 home fans had alsoleft early. Unbelievable. Terrible, terrible, fans. How would they go on watching a struggling team?

Met several of their fans today, none of whom were from Manchester. (St Albans, Kent, London, Blackburn, Oslo) It’s true. It’s gloryhunter central. Awful, awful bunch. The only REAL Mancs I saw were that lot selling scarves and dodgy souvenirs along Warwick Road/Sir Matt Busby Way.

It’s really opened our eyes as to how United really is as a club. It’s also opened our eyes that Latics DO NOT belong in this ‘greed-league’, and it really may be the time for us to go down. My dad and I SERIOUSLY feel we would enjoy the Championship more, rather than playing against 12 men and hardly winning any games. It get’s a little ‘old’ after 6 seasons.

As for the ale today, a good day. 9 bottles of ‘Desperado’ amongst other things. Nice drink that. Good brekky this morning in’t ‘Moon’, and a good tea at ‘Chiquito’ tonight.

As for the red cards, Alcaraz one match, Rodallega three. :(

I agree with you on us enjoying the Championship more. I used to love and really enjoy going to every game. I mean I always excited. Now I’m just so nervous going into every game, I can barely enjoy it :?
Anyway, I’ll carrying on watching them no matter what but I wouldn’t be too gutted if we got relegated.[/quote]

I enjoy going to games in the prem but for someone hoping/wishing we get relagated is in my opinion not a real fan sorry but true

Not a proper fan? Go forth and multiply, my friend.

I didn’t go but from what I saw on the extended highlights i think that the only “beef” we can have with the referee is possibly not treating both sides equal with regards to challenges

I don’t think we can argue with Alcaraz’s first yellow (cynical challenge to prevent a corss being made from a dangerous position
i don’t think we can argue with his second yellow either. Yes I admit Fletcher was already going down as soon as he saw the challenge coming in (& that always gets my goat) but it was a reckless challenge that he had no chance of winning & as such was a yellow. There doesn’t need to have been contact for it to be a foul – different circumstances I know but if it had been in the penalty area, Alcaraz had lunged in, missed player & ball but the opposition player had to jump out of the way & then lost his balance then it would have been a penalty

I have strong doubts as to whether the second challenge in particular would have been given a yellow card if made by a United player but I don’t necessarily think that’s a deliberate thing – for all the will in the world if you’re a ref & a foul is made & you have 75,000 people up from their seats in uproar & then a similar challenge is made & 400 people do the same then sub-consciously you are going to be swayed. That’s why fans are often called the 12th man – if it effects that players its only natural its gonna effect the ref’s too

The red for Hugo was a red card offence every single day of the week. regardless of whether he made contact with the ball rather than the player, you cannot jump into a challenge with both feet & studs up like that – its a straight red. He certainly didn’t slide in along the floor

I agree tyldesley.. Hugo’s was a red card every day of the week! But I have seen 2 footed lunges like that not given reds against us. Still, cannot complain about it.
