Given County are 62 places below us in the league(s), I’m wondering whats the biggest difference in league positions we have had for a cup game?
Norwich in the 4th Round in ’87 maybe…or Newcastle in ’54…or some other? Im going for chelsea/everton in ’80
(yes, im bored)
22 January 2010 at 6:29 pm #19222Bath mon, Chelsea were top of the old second division when we beat them at the Bridge and had just beat Newcastle 6-0 if my memory serves me right. Newcastle were the top dogs of the day when we went to St James,s in the fifties and we would have been in the Cheshire league
22 January 2010 at 6:38 pm #19223As we lost all these games City included im wondering now our biggest ever scalp. Maybe Chelsea (league Cup 4-2) We often beat lower league clubs i e Mansfield Shrewsbury etc as a non league club but we wasnt that many places below them
22 January 2010 at 6:41 pm #19226in the fifties and we would have been in the Cheshire leagueLancashire Combination I think.
I reckon that Newcastle match in 1954 must have been the biggest difference in league positions.
22 January 2010 at 6:45 pm #19227At the beginning of the 1970s we were NPL (Northern Premier League) when we played Man City at Maine Road – they were a top First Div side then, so that would rack up a few league places.
The NPL was only created in 1968 I think so I am not sure of the non league structure in the 50s and 60s, the Cheshire League may have been the top northern tier if you get my drift22 January 2010 at 6:50 pm #19229you could be right about the league sammy marrer but as we lost the replay narrowly it cant count as a giant killing same with City and Everton

That’s all I have to say about Canvey Island ;)

Isn’t Canvey Island Wigan Atheltic’s equivalent of Vietnam?
23 January 2010 at 1:17 am #19266Weren’t Cambridge City in a lower division than Canvey Island, and if I remember rightly, in about 83 we played Whitby Town, not sure what division they were in at the time, but I’m sure it wasnt the equivalent of todays Conference.
23 January 2010 at 1:37 am #19269For me it has to be our second season as a league club 14th January 1980 Chelsea away 1-0 win courtesy of a Tommy Gore goal, lobbed the keeper if i remember correct. Next round was the 3-0 defeat at goodison when Brian Kidd was sent off for sticking the head on Neil Davids.
