Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has told manager Roberto Martinez finances will be tight again this summer.
Whelan said the experiences of two of the Premier League’s relegated sides – Portsmouth going into administration and Hull running up a £35million-plus debt – was a warning to all clubs to keep a firm grip on spending.
And Martinez will have to decide where he wants to save money within the current squad before he can bring in replacements.
Paul Scharner has already confirmed his departure after running down his contract while fellow midfielder Jason Koumas, one of the club’s bigger earners, is also set to leave after his deal expired.
Captain Mario Melchiot is also out of contract and could be another to leave as Martinez looks to freshen up his squad, having already agreed the free transfer of Paraguay and Club Brugge centre-back Antolin Alcaraz.
“First of all we have to decide who is going out before we can decide who is coming in,” Whelan told the Wigan Reporter.
“But Roberto has to accept – like every other manager in the Premier League – that there has to be a limit on what they can do.
“I think that has been reinforced by what’s happened at Portsmouth and the trouble that Hull are in.
“Everybody in the Premier League has to be looking to try to break even.
“I’ll be meeting with him this week to have a chat about the situation, and we’ll see how we go.”
17 May 2010 at 8:16 pm #33786Okay Mr Sky Sports News thanks for the info but these posts are kinda getting repetitive and boring, try posting some stuff that has more of a personal opinion to it than reproducing (copy and pasting) from other websites.
17 May 2010 at 9:22 pm #33790thanks for your post donnelly – keeping us all informed about david whelans thoughts and plans
pity you type before you have done your research(do you by chance work for a tabloid newspaper ?) as i think you may find that jason koumas is not out of contract – the comments whelan has made are probably aimed at trying to shame koumas into leaving,
whelan, as always wants everything his way and makes comments like those to try and get general support off fans who only see a wasted talent drawing 30/40k per week for doing nothing, but he sanctioned his signing and contract in the first place so he cant suddenly expect koumas to walk away from a lucrative 12 months left on his deal -no one else is ever going to pay koumas anything like that amount so why should he walk away
would anyone on here do so ?

If this warchest did indeed exist, d’ya reckon Whelan would have money in coin form, note form, or go old-school and go for the old-fashioned cheque?

Did you do YOUR research LMB matey?
Koumas HIMSELF said that he has 2 years left on his contract!
In regards to the post also… Has Whelan actually said Koumas is out of contract or was that just the tabloid thinking he is?
21 May 2010 at 6:59 am #34270Another reason we need to move players like Koumas on is because of the new 25 man squad rule.
Serrano and Golobart will come into the first team squad next season, while you’d also think a couple more youth team players will be brought in.
21 May 2010 at 11:40 am #34274Serrano and Golobart will come into the first team squad next seasonWeren’t they characters in one of the Harry Potter films? :?
