What is the main reason we don’t attract or ask to play any decent friendly games?

No disrespect to the teams we do play, but why do we never pull a Real Madrid, Ac Milan, Benfica etc., something for the footballing public to come and see.

Even when we were coming through the leagues we managed to get Everton, Man Utd etc, now we are in the top league, nothing.

      Is there a cost??

Why cant/dont we get the big friendly :?:

Because a pre-season friendly isn’t about providing entertainment for the public – it’s to give players a bit of a warm-up. And that applies to potential opponents too.

Why would Real Madrid want to bring their team to Wigan just before the season? They would only bring a team of reserves with a few first team too.

There are a few little tournaments that have good sponsorship attached to them (AC are at the Emirates with Arsenal, Lyon and Celtic) but in the main friendlies aren’t worth the effort.

We only played Man U in the opening game at the JJB which is a bit out of the ordinary, unless you’re counting the Lancashire Cup game years ago when the United Youth team played (fair enough, it included Beckham and Scholes and Neville, but we didn’t know them at the time). Everton too had mainly reserves out.

Be grateful that through the season you will see some of the top teams and players in the world.

The big clubs like Real madrid, Barcelona, United etc.. also charge an absolute fortune which is probably why Latics don’t ask em & I don’t blame em

Shouldn’t it be though? Surely we as fans who support them through thick and thin deserve to see our team pitted against the best

A tournament once a deceade might be nice

By playing them it generated a decent crowd of which some kept coming back and became regulars. By polay a top club every now and then it could well get crowds that wouldn’t normally come and watch us in, and heaven forbid could then start to come on a more regular basis if the experience was a good one

I’ll consider myself told, although I already do

Are the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal & Liverpool (in competitive games) not good enough for you?

If these people don’t attend when we play Man United at home in the league why would they show up to watch a foreign team in a friendly?

Yes they are as stated above.

As it hasn’t happened I can’t comment, I just feel that we get left out when the top teams in Europe (and further afield) play over here – what if nationals of that team that live quite local decide that Wigan could be their team to watch in the UK (clutching at straws Iknow)

To make that worthwhile, in terms of the number of “nationals that live quite local”, the teams in question would probably have to come from either Poland, Pakistan or India.
