Who goes down as the greatest at our wonderful club? Many of you will have your favorite but who was simply the best and for what reason? For me it has to be Paul Jewell, he was a player in the most successful team at the time who won the first major trophy in 1985 at Wembley then as manager he gave us the Prem and a cup final. So my top 3 would be
1 Paul Jewell Has anyone won more as player and manager?
2 Ian Gillibrand Gave everything he had every game sadly missed
3 Arthur Horrocks Bled blue blood mr Wigan Athletic
Special mention to Dave Whelan for obvious reasons
9 December 2010 at 3:57 pm #52897Probably not an obvious choice here, and I will probably get some stick, but I think Stephen Gage should get a mention.
He came in and refloated the sinking ship after Bill Kenyon had tried his best to move us to Skem and back to non league football.
Whether he was a pawn in Dave Whelans master plan to come in and buy us because Kenyon refused to sell to him we will probably never fully know.To add to your list also a mention should be given to more modern day players like DeZeeuw, a true leader.
Older players like Kenny Morris and Harry Lyon would also be included. On the non playing front the likes of John Benson for his efforts in many different guises are worthy of noting.
Manager wise, Jewell is the most successful so far, but spare a thought for others under more trying circumstances like Gordon Milne, Les Rigby and Larry Lloyd.
In fact it would have to be a very large hall to fit in all our heroes past and present.
No history??? Bo**ox!!!
9 December 2010 at 4:01 pm #52899Tough choice, but I’ll go for:
1. Dave Whelan. Contrary to some of the nonsense on this site, we’d still be playing Macclesfield and Bury if wasn’t for him.
2. Sir Lidds. No words needed.
3. de Zeeuw. As per Lidds.
10 December 2010 at 12:33 am #52924Id have Ray Mathias in there too, good manager and almost took us up in the old division two. Not to mention we won the auto windscreen under him.
10 December 2010 at 1:50 am #52930Hard to disagree with the selections all of them spot on
10 December 2010 at 3:23 pm #52936Stan Jackson should be high on any Wigan Athletic list!
10 December 2010 at 3:55 pm #52937Very surprised to see no mention of Simon Howarth in all this lot.

deserve a mentionBickmon, you never fail to deliver.
If it wasn’t for Whelan, we would never have had the additional supporters to lose, or the players to sell.
10 December 2010 at 9:09 pm #52947I loved the Larry Lloyd seasons,….
Peter Houghton and Colin Methven were legends…..

10 December 2010 at 10:04 pm #52952Ignore the current situation – on which the jury is still out – but surely Bob has a place in there?
He, with the other two Amigos (and he stayed the longest and integrated best), marked the start of the journey we are now at the peak of.
10 December 2010 at 11:09 pm #52958Wayne Entwistle.
11 December 2010 at 12:59 am #52960Ken Cowhap.
11 December 2010 at 3:26 am #52966Harry Mcnally. he signed Jewell and other great players, he was shafted by the board. Brian Hamilton(Yes man) the next manager was brought in and he won the the freight rover trophy with Harry’s squad. he had a great handle bar moustache as well and did not toe the line.
11 December 2010 at 11:55 am #52982Harry was a stonemason by trade,he built my uncle jimmys fireplace!
