This club gets a lot of stick at times, but I have to say that today’s open day was absolutely fantastic.
It started with an open training session. I’d say it was probably a lighter one than the usual, but the drills and skills shown was very good, as coach Anthony Barry used a head mic to explain what was going on to the watching crowd. The emphasis was on ball work and pass and move, and it looked great.
At the end of this, some of the players stayed at pitch side for autographs and photos. This was Nick Powell, Will Grigg, Max Power and Terrell Thomas. They were more than accommodating and didn’t dissapoint any child. (And there was quite a demand!) Hats off to them. Well played, lads. All of them were very friendly and nice guys. Max Powers inclusion in the first team set up suggests he is staying. It’s fair to say he’s probably been badly advised…a young lad listening to others. If he’s still here tomorrow, let’s just crack on and put the matter to bed.The players then went off to change and eat lunch and the community team took over coaching sessions on the field for the kids.
At 1pm, the lads all came out in their tracksuits and hoodies and sat at signing tables under the stand. Big queues formed as they were in high demand. Again, they were patient and had photos galore with the kids. My lads met every player and got all their autographs. They were absolutely made up. I shook hands with Gary Roberts and said “welcome to the champions!” He smiled and said “a great bunch of lads here, I hope so”. I said that I was confident. An absolutely smashing day with only one bad point. Early on in the training, Christian Walton was carried off with what looked like a quite bad ankle injury. I’m glad the game is off on Saturday, put it that way. Didn’t see how he did it, but looked bad.
Paul Cook briefly appeared in the stand, but was mainly watching behind the glass. We saw him in deep telephone conversation at around 2pm….only hope it wasn’t anybody after any of our players.
A brilliant day and the club deserve great credit.

31 August 2017 at 11:39 pm #161673A nice little good-PR clip on Northwest Tonight (or whatever it’s called these days).
PC was interviewed (behind the glass) but seemed to just be letting the players bond with the fans without getting in the way.1 September 2017 at 12:46 am #161686This club gets a lot of stick at times

1 September 2017 at 3:16 am #161720Great day for the kids. Remember going to one in 2000 when Rioch was in charge and that was pretty cool.I don’t remember that. I remember one in 1988 at Springfield Park. That was a good one. Had my pic took with Ray Mathias etc…was in Observer. Today my lads were in a group photo. 29 years later.
My boys are still buzzing tonight about meeting the players today. Each and every player did themselves and the club proud. Glad to be a Latics fan, because of the closeness the club has to the supporters.

Yeah was in the marquee and Rioch did the microphone thing and a bit of a q&a. Was good.
