If you have a quick scan around the websites, the fans are actually pretty much in unison that Martinez is doing a crap job, and needs to go.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen the different sites looking so similar. Even the most ‘supportive’ sites have seen the wood for the trees, and know we need to act.

It’s gone on too long now, and personally, I’m amazed that a ruthless fella like Whelan is putting up with it. How this guy is keeping his job is beyond me. Any other manager would be gone. (I reckon Grant T West Ham will be gone tomorrow, replaced by O’Neil, who will do a good job with a better team than most people realise. And who we have to face in the penultimate game).

Not kidding now, but I’ve a nice bottle of Moet & Chandon in the fridge, and if Martinez went, it’d be getting cracked open. The relief would be felt around our sites. Ok, we’d all then settle down and think “bloody shame it didn’t work out” (we would, wouldn’t we?) But at the same time we’d be glad that we could look to addressing the issues we have, and the absolute garbage football we have been playing.

Why has it not worked? Not sure. I just don’t think we are a ‘let’s play it tippy tappy, pretty football’ type of club. Wiganers like seeing 100%er’s. Results. I’m not saying that we are an uncultured lot, but if you put an art exhibition on in the centre of Wigan, how many people do you think would actually go? (local people)

It’s a working class town, and therefore we like working class football. 100% effort, battlers, and a never give up attitude. We’ve never had that since Jewell left. Maybe briefly with Bruce, but that didn’t last long enough.
The size of our club means that we actually need RESULTS, rather than ‘pretty football’. Leave the Arsenals and Uniteds to play the ‘pretty stuff’, and get lauded for it….and then hopefully watch them come unstuck when they play us and we beat them. (ok, maybe not United….)

The only option HAS to be Sam Allardyce, but even so, it might be too late now.

I’m not sure how successful Fat Sam would be in getting our alleged footballers from playing “tap tap” football to “hoof it 70 yards” football.

That certainly wouldn’t suite the style of the likes of Moses, N’Zogbia, Rodallega, Cleverly, McCarthey – yes i realise that three of those are injured at the moment. But in one swoop thats five of our better players looking even more like headless chickens as the ball flies 40 yards over their heads.

Did we not win our first match against one of the Big uns in the Martinez era playing pretty football after 4 seasons of waiting.

You are answering your own post, if you want working class football, we will need to get relegated twice to acheive it in the working class leagues.

As far as I can see there at least 8 teams that are doing a ‘crap’ job of it, we haven’t gone down yet, we haven’t even lost sight of those above us yet. In fact quite to the contrary, although we are dong crap, that means the only way is for us to get better, whether that be in the next couple of weks or couple of months.

A new manager wanting money and a clear out is certainly not the way. Roberto Martinez has so far done (if not the way he thought it would be done) exactly what he said and what Mr. Whelan required him to do. First two seasons to survive and transform, after that to stabalise and go for mid table/Europe.

We are far from relegated yet, so survival is still possible and therefore acheiving what has been asked. If he does it and we end up fightingh again next season, then he will be behind what has been asked and he will be in the firing line. If we are to be relegated, who knows what the new objectives will be and who will be the one to have a go at acheivig them.

i for one wont be cracking open any bottles of bubbly or rejoicing if martinez was sacked (which is not going to happen anyway) it will give me no pleasure to see martinez fail, but i am convinced more than ever now he is not up to the job.

one thing i would like to add is, that despite everything that his supporters on any of the message boards say, this football we are seeing from his team is by far the worst, uninspiring, boring, mistake ridden rubbish we have played for many a year.
i would like to know what goes on in training as i have never seen in all my years watching latics, a team who cannot complete a simple pass to one another, cant trap a ball and has absolutely no movement off the ball,
on top of all this the stamina level is a disgrace for a proffessional football team.

Guys, even if we do stay up, what’s going to happen next season? We’ll just be aiming to stay up again and this will forever be the case until we go down (which we inevitably will if we’re realistic.)

The fact is, we’re never going to reach the ‘next level’ because we’re simply Wigan. Look at 2008/09 when we were looking comfortable in 7th at Christmas, we ended up finishing 11th with players seemingly on the hols in March.

My point is, even if we do get close to the next level, our better players will be snapped up by the big/bigger boys (Valencia, Palacios, Heskey, Chimbonda, even Jason Roberts). So under the current transfer policy we can only ever be a survival club, in my view.

Although it’s hard to see how we’d stay in the Premier league without this policy, because the last established Premier League player we’ve bought (besides N’Zogbia) must have been Kevin Kilbane?

i have to agree with you here -i thought that intricate flowing passage of play that led to rodallegas goal yesterday was sublime !!!

You beat me to that! Let’s be honest, the last few memorable goals that we have scored have come from long balls. Didn’t N’Zogbia run on to a long ball a few weeks ago, when he set up Moses to score? And that N’Zogbia goal last season, against Arsenal, when Rodallega ran onto a long ball, won it, and then set N’Zogbia up?

Lovely, pretty, passing football, eh?

Indeed it is but i’m not sure Hugo would have managed to do much with it had the centre-back not made a hash of trying to clear it and had the keeper not got stuck in no-mans-land.

It was truly some Latics-esque defending from the Fulham players for that goal and i’m not sure how many other defences in this league are capable of such cock-ups to gift us such goals.

I was so confident at 4:35 on Saturday …. less at 4:45 … and when I looked at the fixtures at 6:00 I nearly went and got a Bolton scarf.

I’m so confident we’ll go down that I will post a video of me eating sh!t if we stay up.

Note: The person eating the sh!t will not be me.

Though I’m firmly in the “Martinez out” camp, I’m also in the “anyone but Fat Sam” brigade.

I’m not buying this idea that working-class Wiganees only want to watch battlers. Firstly, because we’ve always tried to play attractive football. And secondly because, for their many faults, I don’t think this current group lacks commitment.

For me, Martinez’s faults lie in his defensive naivity (we were warned about it, by the Swansea lot, and he turned Figs, Bramble, Scharner and Boyce from a fine back four into trembling wrecks that conceded eight and nine almost overnight); his bargain-basement coaching setup (do we really expect Graham Barrow and Graeme Jones to find flaws in the best teams in Europe)?; and his transfer policy (responsible for Scotland, Gomez and Boselli, three of the most disastrous buys in recent times).

The last of those goes to the heart of the matter: he’s quite simply Whelan’s favourite because he’s trying to do it on a shoestring, and complying with Whelan’s one-in, one-out policy. There’s no way that the likes of McArthur and McCarthy are earning anything like what Palacios and Cattermole were on. Stephen Caldwell didn’t even have a club when we signed him.

Finally he seems almost comically deluded that we’re getting there, that we’re not getting the results our performances deserve, that we’re not getting any luck. Even if we’d scored from every single chance we created in games like Arsenal away (Carling Cup), we’d still have lost because we didn’t create anywhere near enough. And we never will, having one cenre-foward chase down lost causes all afternoon.

So, to sum up, we’ve got a weak back four, five in midfield that teams just walk right through, and one up front that’s nowhere near good enough to do the job on his own. It doesn’t look good does it?
