I had the good fortune to chat with him today through work and got to say what a beltin lad he is. This fella was a talent and I think we paid £350,000 for him when he was past his very best. Like others before him and since, he was a little fond of the sauce which prevented him furthering his football career.
I was asking about another Nobber we signed, Andy Saville who he said was back in his home town of Hull working has a postman.
Good to see Ash is still involved with football as manager of Longridge Town in the West Lancashire League. He didn’t sound that keen on the modern day game and attitudes and favoured watching Non League football.
As anyone else bumped into or spoken to ex players recently away from the stadium, It should be interesting to know how they have moved on in the world outside of the professional game.18 May 2017 at 11:17 pm #159085Rather talk to Lea than Lee.
18 May 2017 at 11:23 pm #159086Is he still on the taxis? Him and Kurt Nogan used to get in some right states when they were out round Leyland! I used to see Lee a lot in the bookies in Longridge about 7 yrs ago so he must have a fondness of the place! I think he was managing Kendal Town back then!
18 May 2017 at 11:49 pm #159087Not sure if Lea is on the taxis or not but I know he played for Kendal with Killer and he managed Northwich for a while. Both him and Killer are working in a special school in Preston.
19 May 2017 at 12:46 am #159088I spoke with Maurice Whittle a few times when the was Manager at JJB Sports in Chorley. Not sure what he is up to now, probably retired.
19 May 2017 at 2:10 pm #159089Once had a long chat with Kevin Nichols in the local barber shop during his time at Latics.
Didn’t hold back on his thoughts and seemed a pretty decent lad although was a dirty swine on the pitch if I remember right .
Have also played football against Andy ainscow and skinned him ( the highlight of my life ) another decent bloke who did really well in his short spell at Latics in the eighties.19 May 2017 at 3:35 pm #159090I’ve bumped into quite a few ex-Latics players whilst I’ve been refereeing:
Off the top of my head
Gary Powell (AFC Chester)
Darren Sheridan (Salford City)
Jason Jarrett (Salford City)
Ashcroft & Killer (Northwich Vic’s)
Stephen Appleton (some team in the Liverpool Business leagues)
Graham Lancashire (Burnley Academy)
David Lowe (Blackburn Academy)
Chris Hutchings (Market Drayton)
Colin Greenall (Lancashire FA)
John Filan (Getting his coaching time in at prescot Cables for his badges)
Brett Ormerod (Padiham)
There are loads of others knocking about at that level but exactly who escapes me19 May 2017 at 3:44 pm #159091Me and Horc said hello to Antonio Valencia at Thurston Road Leyland playing for Latics reserves against Noblot reserves. He had been substituted.
19 May 2017 at 5:50 pm #159093My Ex-Latic player name-drops:
I once got into hotel lift in Montenegro, heard someone shout ‘Hold the lift’ and in got Lee McCulloch, Andy Webster and Roy Carroll. 1600 miles away from home and all four people in a lift have a connection to Wigan Athletic. Massive club.
My dad bowls with Tommy Gore fairly regularly.
I play five aside with Maurice Whittle’s twin sons (they haven’t seen their dad for years).
I once had a night out in St Helens with Joe Palladino and his wife (long story).
I played football against Matt Jackson two years ago. He’s fatter and slower than me.
Have bumped into Peter Atherton in the Brocket, Boars Head and in various drinking establishments around Standish on numerous occasion.
Was once on an Easyjet flight to Barcelona and had Franco Di Santo and one of the medical staff sitting behind me. Di Santo tried to buy a can of coke but they didn’t have change for twenty quid, so I said I’d pay for it and told him he could tell Whelan to knock it off my season ticket. He asked in all seriousness ‘Really? Will he do that?’
Was once talking to Bullard at a Christmas party in Manchester. He looked off his head and wasn’t very complimentary about Wigan (It was a few years ago).
I used to polish Martinez’s brown shoes for him.
Edit: just remembered two more
Had a few pints with Alan McLoughlin in a hotel bar in Portugal. He’s fully aware of how crap he was for us and said he was never fit.
Bumped into Michael Brown in a hotel near Portsmouth. Nice bloke. Chatted for ten minutes about his time at Wigan.
(I made up one of above claims)
19 May 2017 at 6:38 pm #159094Once sat next to Ray Woods on a flight to Florida. He was with Coventry at the time and told me a story about playing against Tony Dorigo and how fast he was. He’d gone past Dorigo on one occasion after he’d slipped and gone to ground. Now Woods was no slouch and set off down the wing but was surprised to hear someone catching him up. He said he was even more surprised to find it was Dorigo who’d got up, turned around and caught him. He couldn’t believe how fast he was and although they were both First Division players came as a realisation of the gulf between the likes of himself and someone like Dorigo who an England player at the time.

19 May 2017 at 7:25 pm #159096Ray Woods had a short spell as a really good winger. On form he was tremendous.
19 May 2017 at 8:29 pm #159098Ray Woods had a short spell as a really good winger. On form he was tremendous.Cov signed him on the strength of one good game he had against them in the cup. Obviously living in Nuneaton I know many Cov fans and they couldn’t believe they had signed him lol. I told them he was always that good next time I saw him he was at Shrewsbury.

Was in the Living Room toilets taking a leak & Michael Brown came in & we had a chat whilst pishing. We didn’t cross streams
