Thing is, were not a big club. We are a Rochdale/Bury that has been on a big journey. Years ago Stockport and Tranmere made it to what is now called The Championship and it was our wildest dreams that we could emulate them and get that far up the pyramid. We did eventually but we are still a relatively small club.
Look where those aforementioned clubs journey has taken them now.
We should thank our lucky stars Dave has given us some great moments but at times we should eat a little humble pie, take a reality check, have gratitude for being as high in the system as league one and enjoy our little club taking on the football establishment and big clubs with or without a massive financial backing.

I agree 100% with your post donny.

My worry is that as we once were a premier league team who won a major cup, people IMO still expect that. We are indeed a small club as you say on the ilk of those said teams & people need to realise this. We had a fantastic journey that those said clubs would have loved to have gone on. And, the likes of tranmere & stockport tried to go on but ended up in non league.

Yes, admittedly, this season has been sh1t – we all know it has. But, lets be grateful for what we have had & have still got.

Exactly. The fans that came in the Prem days expect us to be at that level and some of our longer established fans have for some reason forgotten who we are and where we’ve come from.

I’d have loved us to kick on and get 20k in the Prem every week but it was never gonna happen so sadly we had a shelf life at the top.

Well I think we should be more than capable of holding our own in The Championship and if the club hadn’t made those absolute howler decisions both last but one season and this season then we would still be in The Championship and we would never have been relegated! We are not that ‘Little Wigan’ anymore and although we may not be a Prem side anymore or an FA Cup winning candidate, we are in my opinion big enough for the 2nd tier. Perhaps it would help if some of our fans dropped the ‘Little Wigan’ thing, moved into the 21st century proper and started to look ahead instead of behind them.

do most of you still think sharpy makes any decisions at the club …he does what he is told to do but gets the shit for it instead of grandad :P

That’s where I’m going wrong, thinking that its the managers fault for wholesale changes to the squad and for playing dishwater dull football. When all the time its Mt Whelans fault as usual. Did you at some time work for him or has your wife/daughter run off with one of the family bicky?. You really have a deep seated hatred of the man don’t you?. Without Uncle Dave,

          The Premier league was unreachable

European football was a pipe dream

You could smell stale pee 100 metres from the bogs at dear old Springy

The FA Cup was a trophy won by a few and only in our wildest dreams

Gladly for every one like yourself who thinks the man is the devil incarnate there are a lot more who understand just what he has achieved at a very small unfashionable club. Before Mr Whelan few people could tell you anything about us but thanks to the GREAT man the whole world where football is played has now heard of Wigan Athletic.[/quote]

This annoys me same old shyte ._first i dont hate whelan never have second never had any connection with whelan
Its just i see it differant to you yes he brought us success yes they where great times..But thats in the past been and gone but never to forget
But its now that matters and the future is not looking good at this moment in time
I love this club always have owners come and go and i feel the current ones have done their bit but have now lost interest
But why when people have differant views than likes of you do you spout shyte like oh you hate whelan because people worked for him
Fckin change the record people see things as they are now not in the past and if you dont like what i say feck of cause i dont give a shyte

The only issue I have your posts bicky is that you have one solution to every problem Mr Whelan. Its the same rant over and over. C,Mon you cant really think he is in total control of the everyday running of the club. Admittedly Sharpey has made a total balls up this season but I’m hoping he is young enough to learn from his mistakes. I seriously doubt that had grandad been in control that he would have allowed the massive personnel change Caldwell introduced close season. I may be guilty of wearing the blue tinted Latics specs but I wont apologize for defending the man who has given so much to the club. What makes you think they have lost interest bicky?. Could he not point the same finger at us the fans?. Despite him getting us to the Prem and keeping ticket prices as low as possible crowds dwindled after the first season. I imagine that running a club like us is extremely hard given the location in regards to the massive neighbours and having another professional sport in the same town. I reckon the guy has worked miracles here and think he earns every respect.

I fully agree with that Filmoss, we should be able to hold our own but only for a short period of time. Eventually money will catch up with us, we will need to cut the wage bill and we will then struggle.

The basic fact is whether we see the club as “Little Wigan” or not we don’t bring much money in so we either run at a loss which could lead to bigger problems or we run on a tight budget which when you make the mistakes we have this season leads to possible relegation.

Because i for one still believe whelan is in complete control young sharpy is nothing but a puppet on a string does what he his told thats the whelan way
Also why do you say they should point the finger at us the fans ._during the prem days crowds where on the up ._ask yourself why did thousands vanish ._lots where glory hunters yes .But had the fanbase on the up kids turning up more used to see lots of latics shirts in town kid wise but its changed again
Because every year from year one in the prem got worse and became more of a struggle kept selling the cream and replaced with shyte thats why we are where we are the fans i know left because after the FA cup win ambitions of the owners ended their and then._.And was the start of the chaos and shambles we are in now
Sharpy mentioned lack of fans other week as if its the fans who have got us in this mess fans left because we Couldn’t keep hold of our best and we ended up with the shyte we had this season and its going to get worse before it gets betterr

Are you sharpy by the way ?

Knowing the fact that the club spent their ENTIRE income on wages when we were in the PL, what did you expect Dave Whelan to do? Continue to bankroll us from his own personal fortune just so that fans would possibly stick around? How would you then feel if we were in the position that Portsmouth are in or to a more serious extent Darlington?

DW may well run things behind the scenes, but whoever it is that does will run things depending on the bank balance which as I said to Filmoss kind of dictates where we go but doesn’t allow for too many mistakes. Unfortunately we have made plenty in the last few years which is why we need to really really think the next appointment through.

If I was Sharpey I wouldn’t be getting up at the crack of sparrow fart every morning to go to work. The fact that this season has been such a disaster proves that Mr Whelan has not been hands on. Mind you bicky it would not surprise me if he takes a bigger part next season coz he must have realised the mistakes David has made. He could be thinking that maybe he gave the reigns over a little early for Sharpey and he isn’t ready. Who knows? .

                #158667

Whelan is now long in the tooth & too old to run a club.

Sharpe is young & inexperienced. To gain experience, not just at a football club, but life in general, one must learn from one’s mistakes. I think sharpe will have learned fast from this.

Totally new fair mate, I agree with most of that.

Whelans have gone stale now. Their era is over I’m afraid. It happened with the Walkers at Blackburn, who sold up after Jack had passed away. The same will happen at Latics when Mr Whelan is gone, I’ve no doubt about that. May have been different if Duncan Sharpe was still alive, as he would be chairman now. But he isn’t, sadly. I’m not sure who the next owners will be, or where from…..who knows? But I think only then will the club move on. I think we are just treading water, now and budgets are so tight, we will struggle to get back to the top flight any time soon.

I don’t expect millionaires to be queuing up to buy us. Whelan should’ve sold us on the back of our cup run. Missed a chance there.

Hope your right Runcorn and I’m sure he will but as I said it may take a few words from grandad to help him.
