Someone else mentioned this, I can’t understand it.
With 5 in midfield, you’d think he’d create width by playing left footed NZogbia on the left and right footed Koumas on the right. Why narrow everything down by playing them on the wrong side? Might as well go back to Lee Mac!

its so we have 3 forwards in the proximity of the goal area when attacking
whilst making a 3 in midfield to pick up scraps and keep the momentum
the question is can we make it work.Take a look at Barca when they attack.29 August 2009 at 4:22 pm #7273To me it means you’re playing too narrow and cutting out a key way of scoring goals – attacking the byline and getting crosses in. If Gomez, and the winger on the other side are doing their job, would be getting three people in the box to attack crosses anyway.
Lack of width particularly noticeable against Wolves.
29 August 2009 at 6:31 pm #7282The point of playing Gómez is that he is to be the focal point of our attacking impetus, i.e. our play should be going through him. Now when he gets the ball, there is little point in having players who will run away from him towards the byline, whereas when they are moving infield on their preferred foot, it allows for nimble through balls and one-twos.
Also, getting balls into the box from wide would surely be folly without a player who can head the ball in there?
As for width, I imagine that the idea is that Melchiot and Figueroa supply it – which I suspect is the reason we play with two holding midfielders, so that the full-backs have more scope to get forward. It worked well against Villa, but I don’t think we’ve been able to utilise it since because we’ve been so awful.
Like I said before the season started, playing so narrowly is admirable and does provide the more ‘beautiful’ football, but unless you have an exceptional player playing where Gómez does, it falls apart quickly because opposition defences will just defend very narrowly and space in the middle will be hard to come by – which is largely what has happened so far.
29 August 2009 at 10:38 pm #7296Can’t say i find it beautiful – I’d personally rather see some decent wing play, although there is an argument for playing narrowly against the better sides. Against the weaker sides I’d get Koumas and N Zogbia onto their natural sides to get more width, or we’ll soon be worked out.
