11 November 2010 at 4:04 am #50701to say that tonight was the best performance i have seen from a wigan athletic team for 3 seasons.Aye not so bad, it was awesome. How good is Cleverley. Superb, his vision and determination is the kind of personality we need in our starting 11. If i was nit picking id say that, Alcaraz and Figgy were caught out of position a few times and Thomas’ wayward passing could have lost us a lot more midfield ground but wow, i couldnt believe what i was seeing, Was that really the same set of players that tipped up at craven cottage. I wish they would make their mind up this team. Are they shit or are they outstanding at passing and fearless going forward. They like to keep us guessing dont they. Perfect time to prove it and build against the Baggies. The perfect test.
11 November 2010 at 10:58 am #50705Just proves to me that this system works perfectly well if people are committed, pass and move well and it is played at a suitably high tempo.
In other words, what we did in the second half and not what we did in the first twenty minutes.
11 November 2010 at 1:21 pm #50720Agree with what you all say.
If we’d had a goalpoacher on, someone to slide the ball in the goal, we’d have won the game about 3-1.
I can see now why Liverpool fans don’t like the style they play under Hodgson. Never seen Liverpool play like that. They got a goal and got 11 men behind the ball, exactly what Hodgson would of done as Fulham boss.
Maybe Di Santo, or Bosselli even, should have come on with 20 mins left. Perhaps they’d have got on the end of one of Victor’s across the six yard box crosses?
Apart from the ‘killer finish’, the performance overall was very good. Still worries me that we have that lack of clinical-ness in front of goal about us, and we seem prone to picking up one point here and one point there. I’m also slightly concerned that a gap will start to form at the bottom of the table, especially with teams like Blackburn and Stoke starting to find some form.
Got to take 3 points from WBA on Saturday.
11 November 2010 at 2:12 pm #50727I only saw the extended highlights on Sky but was very impressed with the majority of what I saw.
I made a point in a post yesterday that there is not enough movement from players off the ball to make up for the slow methodical style of our approach play but last night there was.
And (another point I’d made yesterday) the midfield closed Liverpool down (after Gerrard had set up Torres’s goal) & even started anticipating Liverpool passes & cutting them outOn the down side there are still far too many occasions when our wide players put a ball into the box & there is only Rodallega & 5 or 6 opposition shirts to aim for & its somet the commentator made reference to on several occasions. Whether that’s an instruction from Bobby, whether the players don’t listen to Bobby telling em to get in the box or whether we just don’t have the types of players who do that naturally I don’t know but its one o fthe major reasons that we aren’t winning games that Latics are dominating (Newcastle, Bolton & last night are 3 that spring to mind & those extra 6 points would have us up in 5th place) hopefully its somet that will get sorted sooner rather than later
Was very impressed by both Diame & Cleverley last night. And Moses when he came on. I hope Bobby starts on Saturday Moses down t’left & Cleverly “in the hole” & that the players play with the same level of intensity we saw last night
11 November 2010 at 3:36 pm #50736Last Night we were very very good, the movement was good (after the first 20 mins), the build to our play was brilliant to watch. One particular moment with N’Zogbia and Stam down the right hand side was exceptional and Diame was close to scoring.
We looked solid in the middle of the park, and we looked dangerous everytime we got the ball. The way the team dug in after losing the early goal was pleasing to see teams of the past would have folded. The passion from the players was also fantastic, especially the midfield 2 of diame and Thomas.
It says something when I expected us to nick a winner at the end against Liverpool and how we totally over ran them. The real test is on Saturday and 3 points are necessary but like I said in a post yesterday, the football in my opinion is NOT boring, and we are unlucky to not be higher in the league.11 November 2010 at 4:07 pm #50747I did think Caldwell was on the edge of messing it up at the back on at least 5 occasions, to his credit after the torres poor marking on the Liverpool goal, he held it together and played a blinder.
11 November 2010 at 7:28 pm #50769you cant have a pop at caldwell there, great pass and an awesome first touch from torres, harsh that
11 November 2010 at 7:32 pm #50770you cant have a pop at caldwell there, great pass and an awesome first touch from torres, harsh that :roll:To be fair, Caldwell was always 2 yards behind him. That’s not having a go at Gary, because lets be honest here, there will be better players than Caldwell ripped apart by Torres this season. He ‘did’ John Terry last weekend, for one.
Apart from the goal, Torres was kept pretty quiet. We got lucky with Gerrard hitting the bar though!
11 November 2010 at 7:35 pm #50772you cant have a pop at caldwell there, great pass and an awesome first touch from torres, harsh that :roll:If the Latics midfield had given me as much time & space on the ball as they did in that instant with Gerrard even I could have picked out that pass
