I credited you with having more intelligence than that. If the Sky money goes into the bank, what do you think the club is run on? Charity, a wing and a prayer?

The club at present don’t need to sell – and this was confirmed by the manager and CEO (see below)

I’ll try and be realistic about this……. 8-)

Charles will leave at some point in the summer in my opinion. As long as (A) we get a good price for him and (B) he goes to a club with more potential than us such as Man Utd, Arsenal, Spurs, Man City etc I’d wish him well and thank him for what he has done for us.

The rest of the squad should stay with the exceptions of a few dead wood players such as Steven Caldwell and Gomez.

If we can get Ali on a long term deal, another good centre half (Scott Dan, Wes Brown) a player to create (Seb Larson is free) and a goal scorer…..sorry guys I don’t know the answer to that one

          2 things from this.
          1. Where has Dave said this?? (Link) & 2. Was it a general soundbite or an answer to a direct question?

I think this is from a gossip site like Caught Offside or Talksh1te that are flinging rumours around in the hope that something sticks & they can say ‘Told you so’.

There are normally very few transfers that take place so soon after the end of season, as most clubs are on a break until July.

As S.W. said the CEO & Bob have both said that we as a club, at present, do not have to sell. That will do for me.

In my opinion, Gary Caldwell’s major failing is his lack of speed/mobility – He reads the game well, gets stuck in etc.. & does pretty much everything else to a decent enough standard for a club at Latics level/ambition
The major problem with Latics centre half partnership in my opinion is Alcaraz. Now he has the speed/mobility & is better on the ball but he seems to have little or no footballing brain. he reminds me very much of a primary school footballer in that he gets sucked in to wherever the ball is as opposed to paying any attention to whatever else is going on around him. Every time I see him play there are head in the hands moments but a few that stick in the mind are:

the game where him & Steve Caldwell nearly came to blows when Steve Caldwell quite rightly pulled him to task on about the 3rd or 4th occasion Alcaraz had deserted his post in the middle & left Caldwell trying to mark 2 players. The actual incident that sparked it was Alcaraz going to the left back spot to challenge a player that Figueroa was already marking
the game at Old Trafford. Aside from being a dumb challenge in general (although for my money Fletcher was “going down” before there was any contact), Latics centre half should not be 40 yards from goal, heading away from his penalty area to challenge an opposition midfielder down the left wing
the away defeat at Sunderland. I think its the 3rd or 4th goal which was a breakaway down the left wing. Gary Caldwell was covering the guy with the ball & Alcaraz was in the middle with a Sunderland player not far away from him when for some reason he decided to drift over to the area Caldwell was already in, leaving the Sunderland player free in the middle, the winger picked him out & he smashed it home

They’re not isolated incidents either – you wath any latics game back from last season & you’ll see Alcaraz doing that at numerous points during the game. If he irons that out of his game then he’d be a belter but for me it indicates a lack of a footballign nouse & that isn’t somet that’s easily coached

A centre half who did impress me on the few brief occasions we saw him last season was Piscu & i hope that he replaces one of them (Alcaraz or Caldwell) as a first choice centre half next season – although if I remember rightly Piscu was only signed until the end of the season so there’s no guarantee that he’ll even be at Latics next season

I disagree with you over Alcaraz, I think he is a class act.

His problem has been ‘trusting’ Caldwell and sometimes Figs to do their jobs.

Sunderland was a prime example, after Caldwell had been turned inside out for two of the previous goals he was trying to cover his captain. Its been happening all season.

With all due respects that is a load of codswallop – he’s a ball watcher (or at least that’s the phrase I think we used to use at school).
Taking the Sunderland example that I gave, even if he thought that Caldwell wasn’t up to covering the guy going down the left wing, its rank bad judgement to think that the situation will be improved by leaving the man you’re supposed to be covering to go & “help out” thereby leaving someone completely unmarked & bearing down on goal

I think its a lack of nous that’s making him do it as opposed to “not trusting” other players to do their job but even on the off chance that it is the latter he needs to worry about putting his own house in order before worrying about how other players do their job.

Some of his passing out from the back has been woeful at times but its somewhat harsh to criticise him for that coz he wasn’t only one who struggled with that

if anyone is unsure about either defender, caldwell or alcaraz – watch a recording of the west ham game and look at their positions throughout the game especially for the 2 goals -then take a look at how many goals we conceeded from set pieces throughout the season and the goals against column in the final table, perhaps then everybody including the management will know were the priority are for any summer arrivals.
